Ignition Staying On

I couldn't find a thread about this but I recall it being discussed a while back. Yesterday my wife tried to start our truck and turned the key only to have it stay "on" spinning the engine but not starting. She manually turned it off and had the same thing happen again before telling me about it and then I had the same thing happen. The second time I tried it was fine and has been since then.

I'm sure this is something I should expect again so I'd really like to know what it's all about. TIA!

Short version: The key stays "on" keeping the starter engaged when trying to start.

Does the key stay in Start until you manually rotate it back, or does it rotate back by itself but the starter keeps spinning? Those are two entirely different troubles - one is a sticking ignition cylinder, the other is trouble in the electrical, probably a relay staying open.

The 4runner has a AUTO HOLD function for the starter. Turn to start and the runner will hold the starter for up to 20 seconds, or until the engine actually engages.

Nothing wrong with the starter. The engine not actually engaging is the more pressing issue.

Good point, I guess I need to pay more attention when it happens again. I'm pretty sure the key stayed in the start position but I can't be sure. Thanks for pointing out the options it could be.

One of those 4r secrets Chris , turning key & not having to hold it to start !
