went out mudding with a bunch of buddies and ran into a guy i knew who had left his radio on too long so i agreed to give him a jump. like an idiot i let him hook up the cables. as i was dismounting my seat i saw a spark and asked if he had em right. **** nope. put em on proper and jumped his rig. wheeled for a about an hr and went home. all seemed well. 2 days later i go out to start her up and shes dead. jump it with my z71, and used the runner to take the dog to the river. when i turned on the defrost it was lower than normal. when i turn on the headlights it dies. (made it home before turning on lights...i knew better). i knew something was a miss in my alt when my blower motor and wipers were running at about half normal speed. im assuming its the alt. could of fried the bat i guess, but alt dont seem to be charging it. it ran fine for a couple days so i assume the ecu is still ok. what do you guys think? im assuming i fried the thing in the alt.....are they rebuildable or should i buy one. id rather rebuild myself if possible...:doh:

Best bet is to go to a auto parts store and get battery and alternator tested.

Agreed!! If the alt is bad I would just get a reman one from the parts store. They have a lifetime warranty too.

Start by checking your fuses and breakers first.. then worry about big parts.

it runs and every thing works. just at a slower speed and headlights kill it. is there a fuse for the alt its self it may have blown? if so it would be new to me. not a problem ive had before. thanks.

I would double check all of your wiring first. Check your power and ground wires on both your battery and alternator. That spark could have just burnt some wires on a ground wire and is causing a weak charge.

going to get time to look into this tommarow. ive done a lil research but need to make sure. i want to check my 80 amp alt fuse. i need to know wich one it is. i think i know... but u know how that is. also one of the 3 fuses under the hood is missing its clear plastic... i assume that isnt right. can i test those just by looking or what? thanks

The Alt has a fusible link, larger than a regular fuse and does not pull out.
You may be able to see if it's good or bad, otherwise you'll have to check it w/an ohmmeter.

The fact that it starts and runs unless the the load is too high would say the fuse is good and the alt is partially charging the battery.

Start by checking the battery voltage with engine Off, then On. A good charged battery should be 12.6V engine Off and at least 13.8V engine On (with a good alt).

as i suspected an alt and a battery charge fixed my issue. i ended up buying the more expensive one that is 70 amps. not sure if i needed it but i plan on adding lights and a winch in the near future. thanks for the input...
