Sounds like the wife fed OP some bullshit story to shift the blame..

To me that looks like someone wasn't paying attention driving across a parking lot through the spaces,instead of around,dropped her phone on the floor,bent over to pick it up while driving around 15mph and ran into that tree.

Check out that other car parked right in front of the tree. From that angle, if the tree didn't stop her the other car would have...

Not one for doubting a story, but I am having a difficult time believing that rolled to a stop against the tree ring, then simply hit the gas and bumped over it. That damage looks as if flying through the parking lot and just smashed into the tree. Seems a lot of damage from such a small tree, but possible.

OP, I am aware Toyota have been adding more electronic features to the 4Runner...so make sure you test drive the new model if you're looking into them just to be really sure you're comfortable with the 5th gen.

The one he has been driving for 3 years was a 5th gen

Whe was parking and stopped short not knowing she was up against that curb. She went to move forward and gave it gas until it jumped the curb. Too much gas.

I went to pick her up last night from the function after I posted. Pretty much stationary launch with not a lot of distance.

I'm pretty amazed.

Speculation - but could see the front wheel stopped against the tree ring curb, car not move, so apply more gas, car not move, so apply more gas. Torque converter kicks in at higher rpms and truck jumps into tree.

The non-linear gas pedal acceleration curve probably doesn't help either.

My drive way is steep and short- hence i have to park perfect to not block the sidewalk. If i have to make small move forward/uphill when applying the gas the truck revs up a lot before the torque converter kicks in to allow forward motion- and is jumpy. I use a bit of brake and gas at the same time to control the jump forward.

I hate the crappy acceleration curve and my sprint booster has eliminated this entirely. Its like a new truck, when I give it gas it goes.

The stock pedal you depress 50-60% and only get say 30% of the available power, hence at the tail end of the pedal movement, lets say the last 25% of the pedal you're trying to modulate 50% of more of the power. Hence all of a suddenly you getting into too much throttle.

So yeah I could see totally happening. And the doubters of how much damage can occur? Remember our trucks are light and flimsy in the quest for better mpg.


people who haven't driven many other cars, or don't notice the 4runner drive by wire throttle curve sucks- stick to the fantasy posts- like I am getting over 26mpg and 400 miles per tank.

this was maybe a mistaken pedal from the spot on the opposite side of the lane from the tree, definitely not from right in front of it. I've bumped enough trees trying to turn on tight trails, this took speed.

Actually I've seen some similar type low speed damage to newer vehicles up in Moab out rock hopping. Low speed + gravity + density can = a lot of damage.

Like I said I was not there. My wife and daughter were fine. and that's the important part.

Here's the PAX door view. The original photos are really big. You can see the lens stuff right in front of the car - higher speed tends to put more distance to debris fields - I know that from experience :evil: - everything past that are just leaves - so indeed indications are very low speed.

I think the tree took care of straightening the wheels out.

I think it looks much worse than it actually is. There’s likely some radiator damage, Alignment... you know.

That looks like bodyshop bread and butter. Dramatic for what happened, but the more I look at it—I can kinda see it. Glad nobody is hurt and another vehicle wasn’t involved.

Yea, have to see what adjuster says. Having replaced upwards of five or six 4Runner bumper covers in my life I know how easy those pop off. PAX door would not open. Sheet metal is easy part if structure is sound. Mechanical is more of a concern. I don't off hand recall what is under the hood in that area.

Like others have said, no matter what happened, your family's well being is #1. I highly doubt it's totaled, looks like a hood, bumper, fender, some small parts under there, nothing major though. Sucks it happened either way. The fact your wife did this at all though is very concerning to me and everyone else on the road. Not knowing which pedal your foot is on is not good and should be addressed one way or another. She had to have been distracted or just not paying attention, both of which are unacceptable. I don't think there is any question that she had an accident or question of fault. These things happen daily - undesirable yes, intentional no - and vilifying a woman (or anyone else) for making a mistake, particularly one you don't know is an internet cheap shot. hwell:

She's certainly upset about it - bottom line is everyone is OK and certainly if you think she is some type of complete menace to society feel free to report your expert consideration to the San Rafael, CA police and I'm sure your expert opinion will be treated with deep consideration. :laugh: Since they showed up, had a look and no citation or indication of foul play or impairment was noted I'm sure they would be delighted to review your evidence... And how - I do appreciate the constructive comments and well wishes - that's all quite stand-up. I miss my 06' V8 sport and really wish I had still had it. I see it on the road periodically - when I traded it in I don't think it made it out of the dealership before someone there bought it.

I'll post up the progress when the adjuster starts their week. From purely a repair standpoint it will be interesting to see the extent of the damage and the fix or otherwise.
