Im confused, how come they didnt change the oil?

There was a sticker on my windshield that said, '1st oil change at 5,000 miles or 6 months'. I set up an appointment for an oil change, took it in today and he tells me to come back at 10,000 and they will change the oil.

He said something about Toyota put the wrong stickers on some cars, blah blah blah.

They rotated the tires and did an alignment since it was pulling to the right. But I even got an email about a month or so ago wanting to set up an appointment.

I dont like dealerships and I dont like other people changing my oil. Maybe this is a sign that I should just do it myself like always.

I change my oil on Brand New cars at around 1,000 miles. The amount of metal specks and funk that comes out at 1,000 miles is why I do it. Once break in is fully done ~ Its time for some freshness.

Once the break in oil change is done, I then change my oil April 1st (or there abouts) and October 1st. I don't pay much attention to miles and change before temp extreme's. It happens to be about every 5000 - 6000 miles. I put about 12,000 miles put on my car each year.

If I plan a roadtrip of 1000+ miles, I'll change before & after as well

IMO ~ I'd take it back and get the oil changed. If they refuse, do it yourself or take her to Jiffy Lube and get it done.

If you look at your manual, it will recommend an oil change at 10,000 miles. Synthetics can go much longer than the old dino oils.

Jiffy lube is probably not the best advice.

I believe that 1 yr or 10k is what Toyotacare pays for on oil change - you're dime if you want change sooner.

I agree with above - I change new car at about 1k, again at about 2-3k and after that about 7k. I don't drive much so often I change once per year - after winter.

To the poster who thinks you are breaking in your engine at 1K miles: Your brand new engine was ran and tested at the plant, drained and then refilled before it ever got shipped. Spend the money but you are doing nothing for the engine. If you say you're doing it for piece of mind then why don't you change it every 500 miles so you will REALLY feel good about yourself? Or every 250 miles? If you're gonna not pay attention to the guys who designed it anyway then go big or go home. Jeez.

You don't have to take anyone's advice here, but since you posted, it will be offered up.

1st don't take it to Jiffy Lube!

These motors are required oil change (full synthetic) at 10000 mi.
You can bring it back to the dealership, but they will probably want to charge you.
These vehicles are under warranty.
Do you think Toyota would take a chance and not do an oil change if they thought they would need one at 5000 mi vs replacing motors due to an oil related failure? NO

If you want your oil changed at 5000 mi, no one is going to try to talk you out of it, but if so, do it yourself or take it back to the dealership and have them do it, but by no means take it to anyone else!

Read your manual, it will tell you when your services are required and what fluids it takes.

Fellow Toyota owners would hate to hear that you brought it to a ??? oil change place and now you are having issues!

If you really want to know how the oil is doing and if you need to change it sooner or later, get an oil analysis kit from Blackstone. They will tell you everything that's going on with your oil.

I understand synthetic oil goes longer, Ive been running Mobil for years. I also thought it was strange about changing at 5000 miles. But the sticker on the windshield from Toyota, the email from the dealership requesting me to set up the appointment and the maintenance reminder came on at 4500 miles is what confused me about why they didnt change it. I even mentioned the oil being changed at 5000 miles when I called.

Besides with all those things telling me to change the oil at 5000 miles, how wouldve reading the manual made it clearer?

Recommended service at 5000 miles is a multipoint inspection and tire rotation. That is what your dealer should have scheduled for you.
You should have a separate maintenance guide that shows the recommended intervals.

Because the sticker is from the Dealer. They are NOT Toyota they are an independent entity. In the manual you will see what that light at 5K means. Basically a fluid and system check. You can trust everyone or you can read the documentation and make your own decisions. You have a 2015 model right?

Yes its a 2015. I ve been turning my own wrenches for 30 yrs, so Im not a newbie when it comes to cars and oil changes. I was doing 6000 mile oil changes with Mobil 1 when other people were doing 3000 and thought I was crazy. Like I said, I didnt see in the manual when to change it. Most manuals up to like 2013 say, 3000 for stop and go, 7500 for normal, or something like that.

Not trying to argue but it was from Toyota. It said Toyota Care, complimentary oil change at 5000 miles or 6 months. When I questioned the sticker, the guy told me Toyota put those on some by mistake. The sticker was for the cars that dont use synthetic. The dealership put their oil change sticker on there today, which had the name of the dealership.

We owned 2 Hondas, both told me when to change the oil AND had a life meter. Just figured with todays cars, maintenance required didnt mean check the oil and rotate the tires. I couldve checked the oil myself and saved a 90 mile round trip. Tire rotation is $8, spent more than that in gas.


Dont really care if its 5000, 10000, or 15000. I just made a special trip to get it done at 5000 miles. If I had known it was just for a routine inspection, I wouldve waited until Sat and made it a day with my wife.

That's exactly what I do. I did my first at 1,000 and found metal in the filter. On my second oil change April 2015, the filter was quite clean. I'll do my next one in October. I had my 4th generation on the same cycle for 10 years and it ran great with no issues and it never went to the dealer. They will screw up the skid plate bolts!

If this helps, the skid bolts are 12mm, the oil plug is 14mm. 6.5 quarts of 0w20 synthetic oil. I bought the TOY640 filter remover (and requires a 15mm socket) from Amazon. I used white-out to mark the filter and it takes 5 rotations to remove and replace.

So really you end up with a 5k Tire Rotation and multi-point inspection and a 10k Oil Change Interval. Toyota never really changed how their maintenance reminders work since they still recommend service a 5k, so they will trip at 5k for maintenance.

which is kinda pointless since you have that big maint. setup screen on the head unit that is not tied into the light.
