I just moved to Minnesota from New Jersey two months ago for Graduate School and sold my Jeep Wrangler and got an 1999 T4R Highlander because I realized that having a soft top vehicle in a place that sees as much winter winter as it does here isn't a wise Idea.
I bought it with some 265/70/16 Firestone Destination LE2 tires that had at least 60-70% tread left and while they do just fine on the highway in drier climates such as New Jersey, they suck major floppy donkey balls in the snow and rain, I've lost count of how many times I've lost traction at the stoplight trying to accelerate. Going around curves and making turns isn't exactly confidence inspiring. After getting some heavy rain over the weekend followed by a few more inches of snow and barely being able to make it up my driveway, I've had enough.
Time to get new tires! Being a poor college student puts a huge strain on the budget and while I would have loved to get some of the better off-road tires out there, I just cannot afford that at all so while browsing at the Discount Tires store near the house, I came across the Cooper Discoverer ATP in the 265/75/16 flavor for 120 a pop...
A tire with a good looking design, is one inch larger than what the T4R came with, and is more of an All Terrain... What's not to like?
Got them installed today and holy moly, it feels like a totally different vehicle, grips excellent to the road and for the first time in a long time, I did not slip, slide, or spin.. I love it already even though I've only put about 20 miles on it already!
