I'm starting to dislike the TPMS system...

As usual with the temps dropping the light on the dash went on. As usual, it was the spare. I filled the tire but still heard a very faint hiss. After 5 days the light is on again. Should I try to replace the core as I guess the entire TPMS valve is expensive?

Gave that a shot. I guess I'll try to take it all the way out and then reinstall. We'll see!

You can replace or tighten the valve core just like on any other stem. This is not a TPMS specific item.

Have to agree here. The MINIMUM one can pay for a 4Runner tire is about $150.00. And that's a second tier brand.

The TPMS has come on and caused me to pull over with a leaking tire that has been punctured by road debris.

It has saved me some big bucks. You don't have to run too far at all on a flat to ruin it.

I do have to admit that dropping that spare to either change a tire or add air to it is a real pain in the butt.

It's also good to check your tire pressure with a guage and inspect your sidewalls, wheels, suspension, etc. at the same time. That can save $$$.

U can go to a tire store and they'll just give you a new valve core. we have hundreds and throw many away where I work. If its the actual nut that holds the sensor in place thats leaking the tpms kits go for about 5 bucks.

I too dislike the tpms system. Its for those that are too lazy to even glance at thier tires before they hop in their car or are to lazy to check the pressure once a month.
Tire shops will check all your pressure for free (or at least my work does), the least you can do is drop by the local shop and ask to get your pressure set

It takes a 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile to pull over on the freeway, at that point you have ruined the tire (hence $150.00 to $250.00-maybe this is why tire people don't like TPMS). This is where the TPMS shines. It lets you know you have a problem.

It's my experience that most tire techs do not like the TPMS because they have to be CAREFUL when dealing with the tires/rims.

Yea I do it all the time makes it much easier. just as long as where the pulley meets the wheel isnt gonna hit a spot that will scratch it.

Ill admit I have broken 1, but thats when they first came out. I have no issue being carefull dismounting the tire. I have to be careful not to scratch the wheel anyway so thats not the issue. my big issue is that some manufacturers make it so difficult to turn the light off. Some have a button, some you need a special tool and proper reset procedure, some you have to drive a few miles, and some your forced to go to the dealer to pay to have them use their special tool. and when its difficult to turn the light off then the customer is always riding our ass as to why its taking so long. If they all just had a button then life would be good

i hate the tpms system thanks firestone... when they first came out i think i broke 3 at 175 a piece:shrug:.. at least with toyotas they have buttons or they automatically go out as soon as the pressures are at the threshold

and when changing the spares core spray it down with some pb blaster because sometimes they will snap with all the road corrosion
