iMac or PC?

Holy crap!!! I thought it was going to be a "destroy Apple" thread. Anyway, my only experience with Apple has been the iphones I've had through the years and one Mac we use at our office. They just don't break or freeze up (they just get a bit slow, but no crash). My current PC I think is starting to die and honestly thinking of getting a Mac. YES, they are STUPIDLY expensive, but I can't ignore (not including the folks commenting on this thread) all the hype.

So yeah, MAC.

Macs are terribly overpriced and all the theoretical photo and music and video editing they are capable of doing are lost on the 99.999% of Mac owners who buy them solely to look trendy while surfing the internet at Starbucks and occasionally adjusting their hipster glasses and sighing deeply as the epic screenplay/broadway show/political blog they're penning doesn't go anywhere.

I'm not a big fan of Windows, but see computers as disposable and see no reason why I should pay 2-3x for something that does nothing more or better. Windows 8 is so dreadful, tho, that I'm reconsidering that thought.

The stereotypes are very helpful with your advice.

I'm surprised by all the Mac support shown here, didn't expect it to be that lopsided.

I love my iphone, I'll start off by saying that. I had an iMac a while back, it sat on my desk next to my PC, I tried using it to get a feel for it, never really clicked for me, and I ended up getting rid of it and sticking with my PC. Just didn't feel it was intuitive at all, maybe if you were starting from scratch it would make a difference.

Win7 has been great IMO, and my next machine will be another PC, no question.

One important thing to keep in mind with Apple is their computers hold their value so much better than pc's and the used market is huge for them. My old MacBook that I bought used in 2008 for $700 I could tomorrow get easily $300 for, probably more. My current $1400 Mac Air I have in a Speck shell and I could easily get a grand for it if I needed to upgrade or whatever.

Also, I find the argument of "over-priced" disingenuous because that's not the right way to think about it. For example can a 85 Nissan do the same trails as my 02 4Runner? Sure but wtf? Macs are of superior build quality and have a nicer fit and finish, if the specs are the same as a cheaper PC I really don't care - I enjoy the physical feel of the laptop more than some plastic one that can do the same but is "cheaper."

You pay for what you get.

Buy what you want.

The whole "my pc can beat up your mac" thing is a waste of time, you work for PC or something trying to convince me or what.

And if it was a money issue, I suppose I could get a PC, but it wouldn't run Windows.

My current $1400 Mac Air I have in a Speck shell and I could easily get a grand for it if I needed to upgrade or whatever.

I had one of the early Air models that came out - before the internals were redesigned and changed up a bit. This was the only Mac I ever had problems with. Seems the cooling was not sufficient and the motherboard overheated causing a catastrophic failure of some sort. I could have replaced the motherboard, but the design was still the same, so I opted back into a MacBook Pro. Never. Even. Considered. Buying. Another. PC.

I always bought sub-1000 PC laptops but always had issue with it about a year or so later. Two years ago, I went ahead and bought a Sony Vaio for $1600...great laptop till this day! Everything still feels solid and screen remains great.

I also found out the hard way when I bought Nexus 7 for my kids. We wanted cheap because this is for the kids. So, I got N7 32GB from Walmart for $250. Boy, that thing is a POS! All kinds of issues. I had to send it back to ASUS...only to continue to have intermittent issues. Thank goodness that this was for the kids! I would use it for target practice by now if this was for me. For me and tablets, it is Apple all the way. (To those who don't know, I use both Android and Apple...I have Galaxy Note 2 and my wife has iPhone 5.)

I think if you buy a new one, they'll offer some sort of intro classes through their genius bar.

What's the biggest advantage to a Mac? I need a new computer, and I basically want something that will still be fast in 5 years for Internet/documents. I don't care about graphics or gaming. Also I want to avoid viruses/spyware. I don't download torrents anymore, but I'm still worried about viruses.

Macs are known to have a much stronger firewall. Than any typically most big bugs have been written for PC's for maximum effect. I find them incredibly intuitive, but some may argue otherwise. To me, they just work and work well.

really depends on what you want to use the computer for. Anything audio/visual I'd say go w/ the Mac. programming and gaming go w/ a PC also for $1600 I'll sell you my gaming rig. I love my macs and have only owned them for 12yrs until recently I wanted a change to have something I can modify and actually add to as years go on. I still rock my MacBook for photo processing since it just works from it. Also coding for viruses tends to sway to the majority platform/OS so soon enough more and more viruses and such will be seen on Apple products just because they are no longer the minority computer system anymore. But it's all up to you and what you're comfortable with.

Nice rig! Do you like the FX6100? I've thought about upgrading, I'm just running a stock clock 955 quad core though would like to get a hex core at some point.

I was really into gaming and had just crappy computers, so built a budget rig for $700 that could play most current games on high settings, and then have hardly touched it since then :lmao:

Really they're inexpensive to build hell my work one cost me $250 to build (already had the memory and an uber good deal on the SSD).

I like the FX6100 since that's the only piece in the home rig left that iBuyPower installed the rest I did myself. At the stock 3.3 clocking it was a beast of a processor of course the GPU and memory i have backing it up sure helps too, lol. Also I'm loving my FX-4100 in my work just as stout as it's part of AMD's Bulldozer Chips (so is the 6100).
I want to up to a new Mobo and to the new FX-9000 series (FX-9590 clocks at 5GHz on stock clock) but that'll happen on black friday along w/ another HD7870 to crossfire.
