In need of advice

Good afternoon everyone! Been stalking the forums for over a month now, finally made an account and in the next month or so I willl be purchasing a 2014 4runner.*

I've done a lot of browsing through these forums about lifts and suspensions. I'm looking for a 3" lift. Mainly a commute vehicle although I have intentions of some off road use mainly weekends and get away trips. Nothing TOO extreme but more like trailing in the woods/mountains. Looking to plasti dip the stock wheels black and adding some beefier tires maybe 32/33s.*

My reason for the post is I'm looking for advice and input on personal experience of different kits. I've been eyeing the toyotec ultimate kit. Mainly the price tag being affordable but would like others' input.*

I'm still working on that lift thread, been slammed at work and home. I'll try to work on it some more here soon.

I think most of us "noobs" see your lift guide link but it's really just a list and doesn't provide any opinion to speak of

I just got a sr5 and have been searching and reading for weeks on the subject of lifts but no one seems to want to answer any new questions on here. Remember someone probably helped you at one time.

The search ( even the 5th gen specific one) brings up an overwhelming number if hits but I've noticed recent threads just end due to lack of replies

What? What kind of opinion do you want? If I said "I like it" what does that mean, especially if I have completely different tastes. Some people like lift kits due to price. Some like them because they have red springs and they look good at the mall. When you get in to the higher end lifts like King, Fox or Icon Stage X if you are a noob you won't understand a single thing about such terms as "digressive valving" or anything else. What do you want to know? I did a whole write up on all the different types of shocks. Not brands mind you but how different shocks actually function. You say you were "overwhelmed" at the search results here. Go try google and use this format: 4Runner 5th gen T4R XXXXXXX where the X's are what you want to know. If you can't find it come back here and I will personally find or answer your questions. If you think search is hard try answering the same question 30 different times and then read the 31st request. That's why there aren't many responses. I don't answer as much as I used to because I am waiting for someone else to step up. Bueller? Anyone?

I'll bite. :)

I spent months, literally 4 of them searching, reading, and digging through manufacturer info, learning about digressive, progressive, bypass, springs, airbags, UCA's, LCA's, on and on, even bouncing around reading on a dozen different forums and all have I done is front coil overs. Not that this means anything but not once did I need to post or ask anyone about what I was looking for. All the info is already there.

I understand your pain, the thing is unless there is an issue or failure all the lift advice you are really going to get is truly subjective. The problem with asking for such broad advice is, you really don't no what you want or need.

My suggestions to you, the process of elimination (or decision) would be:
1. Figure out what you are going to do with the truck. It matters. If you are rock crawling it will be totally different than mall crawling. Then state that fact.
2. Once you have figured out what type of suspension you need, narrow your choices down once again, either by quality, or price, or time to ship, ect., ect.
3. THEN if you still have gotten an idea or have some specific question in regards so to one or more particular products, then consider posting to an existing or starting a new thread.

One more suggestion. Spend some time reading build threads, find some that do what you hope to do and get ideas from their builds. I have found that to be an effective way to obtain oppinions from people who are trying to do similar things to yourself.

Hey guys welcome to the forum, while I'm relatively new here I've learned a lot from the guys above, their links, posts and long history of shared knowledge. As with many forums those who been on for a while try and help by creating quick links and sticky threads to help the newbies. While I know some of them are long, the information is detailed, I find it to be very helpful.

Here's my story:

Originally interested in the TRDP my focus was suspension/leveling that compared with their factory Bilstien setup.

As I read through many posts on the forum I eventually saw value in bigger tires and ultimately lifting the truck. Eventually I met up with a T4R owner who had one of the ICON setups, I was impressed but shocked after seeing the price. I compared other systems but kept coming back to ICON because I had a specific need. I have a 289 mile drive from the Central Coast to our property in the back of the Sierras. A 1/3 of the drive is windy paved roads through mountain highways, followed by 41 miles of brutal rain wash outs, loose rock, culverts, decaying limbs, 4x4 only unmaintained swathes. The last 41 miles is a good 1 1/2- 2 1/2 hour drive . . . Depending on your vehicle. ICON seemed to really fit the bill, at least for my needs. . . but yes it came with a steep price.

I wanted a system with the following features:

  • extended travel, to soak up the brutal terrain
  • remote resi's, allow for better cooling during long duration, high speed, rough terrain penetration
  • CDC, i wanted to be able to dial in the ride as terrain dictated
  • billet UCA's, liked having the additional adjustability, along with maximum travel without binding
  • rebuildable, if your going to pound the snot out of them I wanted a reasonably affordable and quick overhaul solution
  • quality, dont want to be way back in the Sierras with a tripod

As the guys above mentioned, there's a lot of good suspension upgrades available. Many mix and match, build their own best system to suit their needs. I believe the key is "your needs," example, a Toytec mod won't leave the burning plastic smell in your wallet, and many here seem satisfied with their gear.

I suggest you identify where your taking the truck, the mission profile and look to others who have made modifications to fill a similar need.
