Thanks, that does look like a very solid mount. I'm only hesitating because I'm still hung up (no pun intended) on having the phone higher up.

Just my 2 cents but I would suggest just getting a stereo with apple play/ android auto and just keep your phone in your center console or glove box. Your GPS is on the stereo screen, your music streams from your phone, one button push to make calls or send texts, just all around super convenient and it eliminates clutter and the distraction of having your phone in front of your face.

I was just thinking about this today, since there isn't a great spot to mount anything that uses adhesive. I am going to take the radio bezel off and try to mount a magnet on the back left side, but if that doesn't work I think I'll just glue the magnet to the outside of the bezel. That Pro Clip looks ok, but they are on drugs with the price IMO.

That's definitely a good thought. I wasn't thinking of going that route, but it certainly has its advantages. I'll have to read up on the 21st century stereo options. Got any good specific suggestions?

If you have an iPhone there are a lot of options. When I was looking for a head unit for my Ram, anything with Android Auto was way more expensive than it should be. However, I can control my phone for the most part through the screen in my truck, so I don't even use a mount in there. Any newer double din TV should do the same.

I personally have a Pioneer AVH 4100nex and it does everything I could possibly want to do while driving. I know another member on here bought the same one off my recommendation.

Whoa, now THAT is super creative. With the rare earth magnets they make these days, you can probably glue a magnet behind the bezel, then have some type of a metal mount placed against the front of the bezel, essentially clamping the bezel between the magnet and the metal bracket. No damage or residue on the front of bezel. And it might end up being stronger than most adhesives.

That was my initial thought. And if I can't fit anything I will ignore the fact that it's ugly and just glue one of the bigger magnets I have to the front. I looked all over for almost an hour one night online for a mount that I felt was worth the money and couldn't find anything that I thought would mount properly given the dimension of the dashes on our trucks.
I have a few Scosche or however you spell it metal adhesive mounts for the back of my phone from a previous suction cup mount in my Jeep. Should do the trick. I'm just worried about how strong it will be through the thicker bezel when going over bumps and stuff.

I had a Panavise mount and it worked well since it was hard mounted, but I wanted the phone more in my line of sight and a bit higher up, and also wanted to add a second hard mounted spot for my handheld Baofeng ham radio. I decided to order a Paranoid Fabrications panel, which usually comes in a 6 switch configuration. I had it custom made with only 4 switch slots so I could mount some Ram ball mounts on the ends and position my gadgets exactly where I wanted. I have the Ram mounts X-Grip for my phone on the left, and a builder bracket (off a member that makes them on Expo Portal) on the right for the Baofeng. It works for me, the only downside is the Ram mount stuff adds up FAST! It is pretty tight between the phone and the stock shodt since I drive a 5 speed. I’m going to add some support to the back of the Paranoid Fab bracket to make it more solid since the aluminum is really thin and does allow the Ram mount arms to flex a little bit.

My original bracket was made out of steel and thin enough it let the phone shake when wheeling. I remade the bracket out of a thicker piece of aluminum and that did the trick.

I used more bolts than necessary to mount the bracket. Eh, once you've drilled one hole in your bezel or whatever they call that thing....
It doesn't touch the switches even when fully open. It's also now a whole lot more solid.

I do like the ruggedness of the Panavise, and the elegance of the smart radio (Pioneer) ideas.
But as I drove to work this morning, and pretended that the phone was either mounted near the radio (Panavise), or was part of the radio, I found that I'd have to take my eyes off the road way more than with where I have the phone now. And with LA's stop and go traffic, I'm not comfortable doing that.
So for now I'll trudge along with my concept at the top of this thread, and see how it turns out. I'll also give more thought to [MENTION=177268]02gixxersix[/MENTION]'s idea of using magnets or metal behind the bezel, instead of adhering the mount to the bezel. Very clever.

I don't look at the phone much, just listen to the where-to-turn lady and occasional glance at Torque if I have that up, either way,
maybe my very short torso gives me a different perspective of phone vs windshield?
While I am very happy with my set-up I'm also very interested in what you come up with. It's always fun to watch the gears turn.

Good idea, but I can't live without my clock (I know, I'm high maintenance it seems).
I did see some other neat ideas in that thread, I particularly like the driver side "A" pillar mounts. My only concern is that it would favor a left handed driver, which I'm not. I guess I am high maintenance...

I know it's not pretty but it is rock solid. There is no give whatsoever. It's been on there for over 3 years now. I could roll over and the phone would still be there.
With other holders I couldn't quite operate the phone while mounted without it moving around. This will not move at all.
I can adjust the arm to video up over the dash if wanted.
Line of sight is perfect for me. I don't have to turn my head or take my eyes too far from the road.
