In Search of the Ultimate 3rd Gen Phone Mount

Good idea, but I can't live without my clock (I know, I'm high maintenance it seems).

I did see some other neat ideas in that thread, I particularly like the driver side "A" pillar mounts. My only concern is that it would favor a left handed driver, which I'm not. I guess I am high maintenance...

I thought I would be the same way with the clock until I realized that there is a clock on my phone and one on my radio. And then when the clock died again after doing the fix found on this forum, out it went.

I know it's not pretty but it is rock solid. There is no give whatsoever. It's been on there for over 3 years now. I could roll over and the phone would still be there.

With other holders I couldn't quite operate the phone while mounted without it moving around. This will not move at all.

I can adjust the arm to video up over the dash if wanted.

Line of sight is perfect for me. I don't have to turn my head or take my eyes too far from the road.

Thanks! I certainly concur with the choice of location . I'm curious about the one unanswered question in that thread, how did you get behind the bezel to put on the nut? Is it easy access?

And if I take your idea one step further and combine it with [MENTION=177268]02gixxersix[/MENTION]'s idea of using a magnet, what if we took what you have:



And instead of drilling a hole through the bezel, we slipped in and glued a 100 lb disc magnet behind the larger flat portion of the dash, as shown below:



And then stuck the RAM mount to the front side of that location?

I don't know how much magnetism one would lose over the ~ 1/16" (?) of the plastic piece between the magnet and the RAM mount, maybe too much?

I've used these magnets in other applications, and when I once made the mistake of letting the striker touch the magnet directly, I was unable to pry it off to save my life - I was only able to separate them by hammering the striker sideways until it slid off the magnet. So maybe even with the separation it'll still provide enough holding ability?

I guess another (simpler?) option is to use the same RAM mount but drill through the portion of the dash I showed above; it'd be less noticeable.

sorry for the late reply. Here is the phone holder i was talking about. Its really good. Phone stays on there when i off road. I keep a the magnet/metal plate behind my case.

Finally finished my homemade mount, let's see if it fits/holds the phone.

Not for naught, that's a sweet little piece of home brewed solution.
If it does manage to fall off take a deep breath and drill a hole in the bottom support and correspondingly in the dash or use extra strong magnets that will fit with the plastic support behind the dash or some other more inventive less invasive innovation.

That's true, and that's my plan B if this fails. Putting screws through the dash, while painful, would definitely make it super rigid. But it's holding so far, so I'll wait and see.

This is an old picture of my interior, but you can see I just used a suction base RAM mount. It falls off about 5x a year at random...but its been sturdy for years, and I can switch it between vehicles.

RAM mount balls are now installed in two locations. One if the bottom Oh Shit bar hole and one in the j-shifter trim piece. [MENTION=198376]4Runner4Leon[/MENTION] I did end up drilling the j-shift trim to mount the ball. These photo's are of my Fiio X3 and not my phone cause it's hard to take a picture of your phone with your phone. lol

First thing I did after install was go bomb some dirt roads. The same roads that have made ever other phone holder I've purchased fail. Neither location moved. It's f'ing bomber. I should have just sucked it up and payed for the RAM mount a long time ago.

I like it so much I'm ordering another RAM mount and arm. For now I'll use the lower location for my MP3 player. When the new mount gets here I'll run USB C and a 3.5mm jack over to the grab handle location. My phone will go there. It'll be easy to see Torque Pro in that location. The ball sits a little too far in and limits range of motion for the arm currently. Before the final install I'll get a longer bolt and add a few washers to extend it about 3/8". It'll tilt up further then and clear my line of sight to my trans temp gauge.

No pics of the install cause it's that simple. lol

Yep. See the glue residue in the second photo just up and left of my Fiio? That's from a failed attempt with glue. It was just some shit adhesive I had laying around the house. I'll get some Goo Off and clean it up one year. If I was gonna "glue" again I'd use a 2 part epoxy like JB Weld.

I dug this thread up from page 9 to give a big thumbs up to RAM mounts. I went wheeling the other day and both my phone and my mp3 player stayed in there mounts. Not only that the mounts stayed attached to there anchor points. I'm happy and content. Finally. lol
