I slide into a guardrail once in a Ford Focus and all the airbags went off. Seemed unnecessary. But my point is your accident seems like they were necessary.

I went nose first into a guardrail and the bags didn't go off. If you didn't slam your face into the steering wheel, then don't complain that they didn't go off, cause you only want them to go off if you really need them (they tend to burn you and give you big black eyes; and kill babies).

The highlander was probably alot newer. If it is only a couple years old, then it likely has low deployment airbags. These bags have different deployment charges based on how bad the collision is, allowing for lighter deployment in lower impact crashes, so they can be deployed safely. They also have gotten better at shaping the bag for lower impact. This is also why they have expanded airbag use in the back seat, because they are safer for deployment on children. This all means they deploy more often now days. I worked on some of the sensors for low deployment airbags a couple years ago, so I get to dork out on this one...

That said, airbag do go bad sometime, so maybe they should have deployed. But since this wasn't head on and you only had minor injuries anyway, sounds like maybe the impact wasn't great enough to deploy them.

In my last truck I ran into a lady who jumped into my lane on the interstate. I hit her right where the bedside meets the tailgate...created a wedge. My bags didn't go off and I was told it was because both sensors didn't "activate". Meaning that I would have had to hit square across the front, not just damage one side. Weird, but maybe that's how older vehicles (it was a 2001) are. I was going about 40 when I hit her, surprised me they didn't go off.

Glad you're okay. I don't understand your comment about not parting out though. If you didn't have full coverage and the insurance company isn't taking it, why not part it out?

I would buy the 96, combine the two for the best parts and sell the rest. Especially if you aren't working, now is the best time to do something like that.

We couldn't afford storage fee's while we waited to part it out, so it was scrap it or get off the pot decision time, so very sadly I made the decision to scrap the truck, I really didn't have another option. Perhaps in the future I can be a credit to the buzzard crew.
