In the market for a 3rd gen, no locker = deal breaker?

Not overrated at all if you actually take it offroad and it helps with re-sale value. It's a major feature like a S/C or M/T. LSD's suck in the snow.

Come on now, the locker only adds value if you start hyping it up to the seller. Think of it as a freebie. ;)

Remember when I shared the link to that fellow in Paterson that was parting out a wrecked Imperial Jade 99' Limited? Sometime in spring last year. Ended up scoring that whole rear axle for $250. I opened the door and saw the locker switch. Kept my mouth shut about the locker and just asked him how much. I think he wasn't too happy about my sale after someone on the forum called him asking if it had the locker and said you can tell by the switch on the dash.

Yea, LOL, well there's plenty of uneducated buyers & sellers. Eventually I'm going to sell my Limited & it will be listed on Toyota enthusiast sites to get top dollar for having the locker & being a southern truck. Nobody in the N.E. wants to invest thousands into a rust bucket 3rd gen build. I have the perfect truck for the right buyer.

She's rolling on HTR's & 4th gen sport wheels right now. It's been a long time since I've felt the smooth running of HWY tires! LOL :naughty:

Factory locker is overrated af if your driveway doesn't look like Moab or the Rubicon. Can't tell you how many times I've actually needed a locked diff without having to do the whole stop-neutral-jack off the 4wd lever until light appears on dash-press button-reverse procedure. For 99.999999% of driving conditions you'll find a Trutrac LSD more effective.

LOL, is it really that cumbersome to engage the locker? And yeah, I've read a lot of good things about the TT over the years on many vehicle boards.

Dont listen to him, he wont even change his own oil. :bigok:

come to a complete stop - J-shifter into 4-lo - push the button LOL

At 8AM in February while trying to make a left turn onto a busy main road that has some patches of slush but not enough slush to engage a part-time 4x4 system(cause you know that bish will bind the fack up)? DAMN right. The transfer case in all 99-00 Limiteds is by far the best 99+ upgrade for that issue. Also available in all 01-02 4x4s. The center differential was deemed so necessary that every 96-02 Hilux Surf had one.

It really doesn't need to be hard at all. Search for the "Grey wire mod" (because this was originally done in a Taco where this wire is grey), sometimes also called the "Blue Wire Mod" (because this wire in a 4runner is blue). There are two wires in this mod. One of them controls the speed safety that doesn't allow the e-locker to engage above 5mph, the other controls the safety that doesn't allow the e-locker to engage unless you are in 4-lo. In the mod you would ground out the wires to allow you to engage e-locker anytime. When I did this mod I only grounded out the wire that controlled the 4-lo safety. I kept the 5mph safety wire intact. I didn't want to accidentally hit the button at high speeds and trash my rear diff and I really don't think its inconvenient at all to slow down to 5mph to activate the e-locker, you can always accelerate afterwards and it'll stay engaged. I can now be in 2-hi and have the rear locked in just a couple seconds.

The plug in question was unplugged from the black box at the top of the picture.

Grounding the Blue/Red wire removes the safety requiring 4LO

Grounding the Green/Orange wire removes safety requiring 5 MPH or lower to engage.

You'll unplug from the black box. Locate the wire to cut. The SHORT end, still connected to the plug, you'll extend and ground. I grounded mine to the bolt at the top of the picture thats mostly hidden behind the huge blue Monster wire. The LONG end, that you cut OFF of the plug, you'll tape off, cap, etc.

If you ground the wrong side of the wire (harness side) it will make your 4Runner think you are in 4lo which screws up the shift points and disables OD... When you grounded the CORRECT side (plug side) the mod will function correctly.

FYI - I have a 2000 Limited 4x4 factory e-locker and I have had zero issues with this mod. As long as you ground out the correct end of the wire you cut, you'll be fine.

Or get an aftermarket low range button and do it at 60 on the freeway!!!!

Ground one wire and the factory switch has the same capability [emoji851]
Find the cleanest rig you can. If it has a locker- awesome. If not, add one later if you want.
'01/02 base and SR5 HVAC controls are electronically controlled. They look manual('cause they're knobs), but they are actually electronic. It's my favorite HVAC control style of the different 3rd gen controls.

Hahahaha. Oh hellllllll no I don't want to. Ever seen that filter on the 3.4? I just cleaned the oil stains in my garage floor too.

I changed the oil on my Limited 2 weeks ago for the first time, what a pain, had to take the front skid off to get the wrench on. I keep old cardboard under my vehicles when doing oil changes. My 3RZ is easy & so is my 09 4cly Accord & my GF's H6 04 Outback. Both right on the bottom.

Not even joking, an oil change on many modern supercars is easier than on that V6.

The Multi-mode T case is my favorite feature on my '99 Limited. The 'runner can behave like a big Subaru when full time 4wd is engaged.
