Increased mileage after fuel filter change

I had my fuel filter change for the first time last month. I can tell you that I’m getting 12 to 15 miles more per tank than I was before the change. It’s great.

BG products, Techron, the Gummout, and the Amsoil.

I cheat and have the phone number of the local BG guy and can meet him to get what I need off his truck. For all you all that want to do engine flushes to remove sludge etc their BG-109 is awesome.

I always grab a couple of 6 packs when Costco runs a sale. Great pricing, great product......throw it in the tank once every few months.

Thanks. But I’m curious. I use Mobil and Shell gasoline. Wouldn’t the detergents in that fuel be good enough?

Maybe. I just know in 30 years of running EFI Toyotas. I have yet to have a bad fuel injector in one. I use a good quality fuel injector cleaner a few times a year as thats cheaper then changing the injectors.

Yes, I never use injector cleaners in any of my cars. Feel its kinda a gimmick for most peopl. im over 250k on prius and 4runner.

I don't think it is as good injector cleaners will clean the fuel system. How many folks on here are pulling their injectors sending them out to be tested or going to a junk yard to pull a set and send them out to be tested and cleaned?


I had many Toyotas over 250k over the years with original injectors in them. Tetanus 1 1998 is at 265k and original injectors still in.

As I said a few times. I would imagine after 30 years with a pile of Toyotas that I would have had a few injectors by now fail if I didnt occasionally run injector cleaner through. However, maybe I just that lucky but I really doubt that I am. As I dont have good luck that way.

I run techron injector cleaner about twice a year. It is preventative.
I have seen rough running cars/trucks smooth out with running injector cleaners . I run quality fuels when I can...but remote locations you never know and related to that I change my fuel filter about every 2 years.

I have replaced my injectors also preventative when I did my knock sensors..at 220k ....yep could have been a waste of money....oh well

I never tried that one. I used many types of injectors and carb cleaners and have has success with a pile of them.

I am sure there are 25 you tube videos out there that show which ones work and everyone is the best.


The issue is you need injector cleaners before the injectors are plugged. If its misfiring at that point you can have too much lacquer and deposit build up that they will need cleaned.

At that point it's like a clogged drain. Have to tear it apart and clean to get it to function properly again.


Injector cleaner is not magic in a bottle and that's why so many say its useless and dosent work. It helps eliminate build up of deposits because so much gasoline out there is very crappy.

Well that's how I see it as but th as it's just my 2 cents.






The switch to ethanol blended gasoline should be eating the deposits out of the fuel systems.

And kill our gas mileage . California switched to a 10% ethanol blend 2ish years ago and I went from an average MPG's of 18 solid 21 hwy to 16 mixed and 19 highway... it really doesn't like it.

Totally agree Brillo. I never messed with stuff that went in the tank, as I figured it just wasn't any type of concentration that would actually do anything.

I don't bother with motor flushes either before oil changes, I just change it 1000 miles early every once in a while. There's plenty of detergent in modern oils to fight sludge as long as you change it regularly. If you are REALLY paranoid, you can use the new GM Dexos Spec oils.

The ONLY thing I do is the Seafoam through the Vacuum line. Every time I have done this to a car it has been a massive improvement in the way the vehicle runs. BG is also an excellent product I have used the same way when I had access to it at shops.

Oh 100% correct. The 10% ethanol actually hurting our mpg on our rigs. Our systems were designed for 100% gasoline. Granted the engineers at toyota stated that the older engines should run with up to 15% ethonal in the gas without damaging things that's a 5% more loss in mpg.

I honestly think this is the cause for the fuel system issues.. the ethonal is eating the deposits out and clogging the filters and injectors. As this makes the most since with the age of the rigs and why people are having to clean and replace the injectors.

Different experiences here. My first fuel injected Toyota was a new 1984 Celica GTS. Aside from two budgetmobiles (1979 Corolla and 1987 Tercel wagon), I've had nothing but fuel injected Toyotas since then. Most of those were driven past 200k miles. I never had a fuel injector problem, and never used any additives. So maybe I'm not the norm here.

To add to what's already been said, run some cleaner through, it will be best while the filter is still fresh as can be. My favorites are Red-Line SI-1 and BG44k Platinum. Both are excellent combustion cleaners as well; feller I knew ran SI-1 through constantly for maybe 3-4 tanks, then gave it a good ol italian tune up for a good 10 minutes (and changed oil for good measure). Pistons were nice and bright afterwards. Could've been a thin layer to begin with, but I've been a firm believer ever since. If you can, go out of your way for some ethanol-free gas, you'll be amazed at how much your 4runner likes it. All just my 0.02

Semi-related I also recommend try running some Marvel for the entire duration of your OCI. Rotella T6+MMO is absolute gold.

I know this is an old post, but I'm curious did you ever try the Red Line S-1 or the Techron?
I assume it's bad if we put multiple injector cleaners in the tank when the gas is almost empty, before refilling and driving it more.
