Infamous Drippy Drip V8 Actuator

I've read numerous threads on the infamous actuator drip, so not looking for the how-to-repair responses, but was wondering if anyone was able to find or can make a suggestion on any stop-leak solutions? At some point I will have to address this but today not going to fork out the $$$ for the proper way to fix it. It still works, used it today and no issues locking in and out, although I must say at least once a month or so I do this for general purposes. $225K on the V8

Too bad I don't live closer to you. I'm a former Master Diagnostic Toyota technician, and you can reseal these by splitting the transfer case in the truck, and it only takes about 2 hours or so. Mine is doing the same thing, and I am just trying to find the time to do it. I'd charge anyone that needs it $200 plus parts. I wouldn't mess with any "stop leak" stuff if you want to preserve the longevity of that transfer case. I've never seen any good long term from stop leak additives.

Can you elaborate on what you mean here? My understanding is that you have to remove the transfer case completely to take it apart and most dealerships assume it's an 8 hour job.

I just had this problem too. I ended up using bluedevil stop leak for about 2 weeks. It seemed to stop the leak so far. Others have had good luck with blue devil too. The only problem is you can't leave it in too long. If you do it'll cause the output seals to leak which happened to one of mine. I don't like using stop leaks but I wasn't going to pay the dealership $1000-1500 to fix a $5 seal.

Probably saying he pops them out of the vehicle and then splits them on a bench. If you've done enough of them I could see someone getting it done in a couple hours with these units.

Or he's splitting the case on the vehicle, not easy; but doable and with enough practice I could see it being quicker.
 
Dropping and splitting mine in spring. I've had the seals for months. Just waiting on some warmer weather. Threw a little Blue Devil in there because the leak was getting bad. It's slowed considerably but I was never looking to buy myself more than 4 or 5 months.

If you don't want to fix it now and just let it drip. I let mine leak over a year before finally fixing it and just added a few ounces of oil to the TC at every engine oil change.
 
My driveway looks like hell! Drippy Drips all in one spot, when the weather gets warmer or funds increase may attempt, but will settle for the continuance of adding some at each oil change. Its my daily driver so I cant be hard down for very long and would need the warmer weather around in order to ride the Harley to work. Dang!

I understand. Mine was ridiculously low when I bought my '03 4.7L in November. I knew what was wrong with it even though the previous owner was clueless (or just played stupid really well). I'm thankful all is still functioning properly. But the amount I was losing before I sucked it up and put a little Blue Devil in there was no joke! I have a giant piece of cardboard in the garage so I save my concrete.

Sorry for the long delay in response. If you want to reseal the entire transfer case, it does need to be removed from the vehicle. However, if you're just looking to replace the actuator seal, maybe the front output or rear output seals, and reseal the case halves, you can split the transfer case without removing the entire thing. Meaning, the front half of the case stays bolted to the transmission while the back half (including the actuator, gears and chain) come out of the vehicle. From here, it's a piece of cake to replace the actuator seal and rear output. The front output is a little harder since the front half of the case is still in the vehicle. It can be a little tricky, but with some patience and understanding of how it all works, it cuts the job time in half, if not more. I can do these in about 2 to 2.5 hours. Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Splitting the case in the vehicle is actually easier than you think. You just have to remove one of the detent balls and the front output yoke, and the entire back half of the transfer case comes right out. The only thing you have to be careful of is not forcing the case while removing it, because if one of those actuator rods comes out, it will ruin the seal for it, which are nearly impossible to find aftermarket and aren't available separately from the actuator from the dealer.

That seems like it would be pretty hard to put the half back together with all the gears and everything aligned but as you said if you know how it goes together and are careful I could see how this would work.

Is a lot of the time just cleaning off the mounting surfaces? Or what takes the most time?

If I remember correctly, the only thing to worry about when going back together is making sure the "clutchpack" is all the way in. The clutchpack actually stays in the front half of the transfer case, and the housing that slides into it is what you have to make sure is all the way in. It's the same as splitting outside of the vehicle though. Either way you split it, you have to watch out for this. Other than that, the gears and stuff are simple and don't make going back together too difficult. The clean up is pretty simple. I use a razor blade to scrape it, then a scotch-brite pad to finish up the surface. The hardest part is finessing the actuator out of the transfer case without one of the rods coming out, but that's not terribly difficult if you stay patient, pay attention and go slowly.

Thanks for the tips. Might have to try this in the future. I much rather have a new seal in there.

I had a picture of a 5th gen transfer case apart (a coworker was resealing it so I was snapping a picture for reference for people), for the most part aside from the actual Planetary assembly, it all stays on one half of the case. That does sound pretty easy to do with it in the vehicle.

That being said how do you deal with that one annoying needle bearing (or was it a washer? I can't remember it's been a bit) that doesn't want to line-up basically unless you have the case almost vertical? I forget what it's called but I think it's just supporting the shaft end that comes off in the half for the actuator. That thing was always annoying when you're trying to seat the case halves.

That's right! I forgot about that bearing. I don't remember what they call it either, but I can find out if anyone wants me to. As far as dealing with it, I have used wheel bearing grease or even Vaseline to keep it in place while going together. They make some stickier grease for building automatic transmissions that works really well too, but I doubt most people have a tub of that laying around. Any grease will work, and won't hurt any components since you're only using a small amount to hold the bearing in place during assembly, and it will eventually mix with the 90w as you continue to drive it. Thank you for sending the pictures. When I do my actuator seals, I was going to write a thread about it also. It's really a neat trick to cut down on the time, but if you're paying a dealership or shop to do it, 9 times out of 10, they're just going to charge you the full price for a transfer case re-seal, unless you find someone that has done it this way before.
 
Anyone in the Northern Virginia area looking for a little side work, happy to work with you on a fee for service basis! Like I said, its a daily driver so while I am confident in getting it apart, its the putting back together and ensuring things are going in the right place. Can't be down to long if you know what i mean.

Hmm I could see bearing grease working to hold it in place. I just remember it was annoying because it wouldn't line up right sometimes and you'd have to pull the case apart again.

Depending on the mileage of the vehicle I will often recommend a little additional labor and a "rebuild kit" (consists of new seals and o-rings) when recommending the actuator repair. No one has ever bought it of course, but it's what I did on my vehicle when I pulled my case out to fix the leak.
 
I noticed last night that my transfer case is starting to leak. What parts are needed to re seal everything correctly. Been looking on line and can not find much info on this. I will have a transmission shop do the work as the closest dealership is 3 hours away. If they have to pull the case to re seal it are there bearings that should be replaced as well while it is open? Also was looking on rockauto and they offer a timkin actuator for a little more than half of what I can get the Toyota actuator. Has anyone used an actuator that is not a Toyota part?
