It's hit and miss with them for me. I replaced my sway bar end links years ago with them. Lasted one year before rusted so bad the nut twisted the shaft in two. That's just insane in my book. So I was just being careful when it comes to parts as important like cam assemblies.
But if they are better built and are greasable. ... the price is a lot better then what I can do locally.

Feel your pain you living in the rust belt. I live in southeast US rust is the least of my worries. I still paint all new parts tho. Been running Moog sway links since 2000 on my 96 they're greasable. Did break one, my fault.

. Our NAPA store wanted $120 for one (not sure if one or set) and they claimed because it was greasable. I called BS.
Damn I've always heard things were more costly in AK that's crazy. I'm sure Rock shipping will be a bit more to AK than lower 48 but still.

I'm building on a 97 I bought from a customer at work
Welp, got everything back together on Thursday. I experienced some difficulty getting the rack back in place... The driver side bolt that goes through the cross member took some serious persuasion to get through the center sleeve of the urethane bushing. Getting the bushing out got my creative juices flowing too.
I knew that 35 mm hub socket would come in handy for something other than hub nuts.
Look real close... that front end is waaaaay outta whack. But she was ready for some new meats.
God I hate cleaning up the messes I make...
So I take it to a local small tire store for the alignment & tire mount & balance. They were neck deep in breaking my 265's off all of my rims when they told me that they couldn't do an alignment. They claimed that my driver side inner tie rod was bad. Well that's very odd... Considering that I'd replaced the driver side in March of 2016 (verified by looking back at this thread)... but it was bad again??? Hmmmm... I'm not buying that. The "mechanic" grabbed the disc & manipulated it side to side to simulate a loose front end. I was so disgusted, I decided to just not even try to argue. I'm guessing that they didn't have the key all the way off & the steering wheel wasn't locked. :frusty::mad2::mad2::mad2: I went home & stewed over it for about an hr. I decided to take it to the Toyota dealership & see if they'd just look at it for a 2nd opinion. They called me an hr later & said that it was waaaaay outta whack, but they were able to align it perfectly & none of my steering gear showed any wear... almost as if it were brand new. 'Magine that... b/c it basically is brand new. I got up there at 6pm to pick it up right before the service writer was about to leave. He said he'd have the tech bring her around. Well, I waited & waited for about 30 min. Finally I see him drivin up & it was a young black guy. I'm pretty sure he was in love. He paid me a lot of compliments about the truck & apologized for taking so long b/c he just wanted to drive it. He said he always had a thing for 4Runners. It was flattering, especially after all the work I've put in on the truck. Anyway... Here she is:
The more I look at this tread pattern, the more I love it. I figured these tires would rub way worse than they do. I still need to trim some stuff, but overall, it's not nearly as bad as some setups I've run.
Hopefully all my front end woes are no more. I'm in the process of saving up for a trailer & a winch bumper. I NEED the trailer more than I need a winch & winch bumper... so I'll be putting any other upgrades on hold for a couple months.

I like it, that tread looks good. How much road noise does it give you?
Bet it was nice having rack on floor to replace bushings!
Was it a headache to put rack back together, You are the first person I've heard of doing it that way.

These tires, to be as aggressive as they are, are insanely smooth & quiet. There's some humm, but nothing compared to the last pair of brand new Cooper STT's I had. I haven't really had time to do any trimming, so that'll be next up.
In regards to pulling the rack completely... If I had to do it again, I don't know that I would. The main reason is b/c the pinion is a helical gear & it's a complete b!tch to get it to re-seat while still attached to the steering shaft. I unbolted the steering lines off the frame rail after I'd already pulled the rack, so I don't know that I went about it the best way. I was just ready to get done w/ the project. This is really 1 of those projects that really makes you appreciate those times where you've had access to a 2 post lift in the past. If I could do it again, I'd probably just leave the rack in place & unbolt the lines on the frame rail & the upper crossmember where they cross under the engine bay to the PS pump. The whole behind the axle rack & pinion set up reeeeeaally sucks.

I'd say these DC's are much quieter than my last pair of STT's. My STT's were relatively mild when they were brand new, but definitely got louder as they wore down. These are incredibly smooth. If you want to come take a ride to help you decide, let me know. The price difference alone was what sold me over the STT Pro's. $185 > $240+/- every time. As far as upholstery shops, I know of none in Madison. When I used to work for Penske, we'd send stuff to a place between Gallitan & State St. Kinda by Black Diamond & Danny's ha! I appreciate the offer for help, I may take you up on that some time. Same goes for you.

Well, I got tired of the constant oil checking d/t leaky valve cover gaskets &/or cam plugs/half moons. So I decided to order a set of of cam plugs.
I changed the valve cover gaskets a little over a year ago & I've noticed oil still continuing to leak ever since. I wasn't aware of the cam plugs & half moons being prone to leaks at the time. I figured if the valve covers were changed, then it had to be the cam plugs &/or half moons. Yeah, well, it was the valve cover(s) too. Started on the passenger side.
After pulling the valve covers, I discovered this...

I'm not quite sure how this happened. Only thing I can figure is, cheap ass ill fitting gasket became displaced when I re-installed the valve cover & it got eaten up by the cams over time.
Passenger side buttoned back up w/o much issue. I know some folks experience the half moons breaking upon removal. I didn't have this issue on the passenger side. However, the driver side is a different story. If something can happen, it's gonna happen to me.
Of course a sliver of aluminum fell down this little rabbit hole
It was a very small sliver, but I'm gonna try to fish it out. Naturally no one had a new half moon in stock & the soonest an online vendor could get me 1 is Monday (6/12) morning. So she gets to sit up all week & all weekend waiting on parts

This is the drivers side cam plug, it would appear to be the biggest offender in the leakage department.

It was actually aluminum... I haven't had a chance to see if I can get it yet. But if I can't, it sounds like it's not a big deal. I'm gonna try & snag it tonight. You don't have a spare ½ moon laying around do you? Ha! Can't get 1 in til Monday or Tuesday.

No I sure don't.
She's been back together for several days now, I've driven her to & from the hospital several times. As far as I can tell, my leaks are nipped in the bud. I sprayed everything down that could be hit w/ brake cleaner to make sure all the old residue was eliminated. Much to my chagrin, the build will probably be placed on a temporary hold for the summer. A couple weeks ago, my wife jumped into the shallow end of her moms pool & broke her heel. So I'll be working a whole lot of OT... all to keep the bills paid the 2-3 months that she'll be outta work. Looks like a very strong possibility of surgery, so the fun police have officially arrived.

Well since she'll be sitting around the house not doing anything all summer, give her a honey - do list for the 4Runner and show her your tools.....
Really though.... that sucks. Hope she recovers. Broke mine years ago. It was so simple of a brake but I'm paying for it now. Regular physical therapy to get the muscles and movement right. Getting old sucks.

Just a little update on my build progress...
I've been a little pre-occupied w/ this. My wife wanted a dining room table, I've run a table saw a few times, so I'm clearly qualified to build a really nice table. After combing youtube & IG for ideas... I fell in love w/ Black Walnut. I ordered up about $700 worth of Black Walnut, bought a Jointer & got to work. There are a total of 8 screws in the entire table. Those 8 screws are exclusively to hold the top to the base. I wanted as few screws as I could. All of the boards are jointed, biscuited, & glued together. My breadboard ends are mortised & tennoned w/ a tongue & groove. My base is pine, b/c it's cheap & I wanted to do a painted antiqued look on the base anyway. My base is entirely glued & doweled together. I've built a few things prior to this, but this was by far my nicest piece. She ended up being about 94" long by 43" wide. Now that I'm done w/ this project, I can get back to my 3rd gen 4Runner build. Time for a winch bumper... Anyone wanna start helping me fund my build by ordering a dining room table?:hungry::hungry::hungry:
