So, today I was installing the TRD check valve, which had me in close proximity to the fuel rail...

I kept hearing a hissing noise and couldn't figure out what it was. Finaly I noticed whenever I hit the fuel injector fuel would leak out of the seal...I was pushing on it with some force, not a whole lot though


My question is, are the seals shot? It just had me kinda worried to see fuel leaking out that close to the exhaust. The injectors have no more than 15k miles on them

Could be. You are talking about the 'O' rings that go on each end of the injector right? The only way to tell is to pull that injector and replace the 'O' rings. I know that supposedly every time you pull an injector you are advised to replace the 'O' rings.
A helpful tip on reinserting the injectors after doing so is to slowly 'wiggle' the injector back into the block and the fuel rail. Obviously you wanna start with the fuel rail first. The reason I say so is bc I went thru several 'O' rings by crushing them by trying to force the injector into the block too hard once I had it on the fuel rail.

Yes the O-Rings, it didnt appear to be leaking after I took it for a spirited drive...with my extinguisher in the passenger seat :nerd:

I dunno, I am just nervous about it. Maybe I just cocked it to the side enough for fuel to spray out a bit
 
After reading your post again, I wouldnt be too worried unless it is leaking when NOT putting force against it. But it is an indication that the 'O' are pretty toast. Like I said, if you ever pull and injector it is highly advised to replace the rings.
 
When you hit the fuel rail, it might miss align one of the injectors. With the age, the O-rings are now plastic. this is a good time to get a injector repair kit.

Gasoline leaking to the exhaust manifold is dangerous. It can autoignite at 250 C, which is the temp of the exhaust manifold.

Something to consider....also keep in mind these are upgraded injectors no more than 15k old.

I would hope the seals last longer than that
 
That one comment was a joke. As long as they arent leaking normally i'd say ur fine. wouldnt hurt to keep an eye on it, just to make sure.
 
If you change out the o rings make sure you get the complete seal kit (3 per injector).And to make your life easier, instead of trying to sqeeze the o rings in to the rail dry put a very light coat of oil.Dont put too much ,just to lubricate them a little.I've done over 10 sets this way and never had a problem with leaking.
 
It is easy to **** up the seals when installing the injectors. I probably did it to three injectors when I did mine. It is best to lube them when installing them or it is basically a guarantee that you will screw up at least one of them.

huh, lol, maybe i should go tickle my fuel rail and see where my rings are at, that's no bueno i've seen a few vehicles burn to the ground because of fuel and exhaust manifolds,happens a lot in classic cars with rotting fuel lines or bad clamps....you probably fine for now but i'd replace them, or at least pull one and see what it looks like,,

LOL, yea I will go ahead and pull the injector out in question today.
 
Make sure you don't over torque the fuel rail bolts. I did that with my old 2000 and it caused the o rings to not seat properly and start leaking.
 
Okay well upon further inspection...

The o-ring that goes from the fuel rail to the injector is leaking.

Would these be available from Toyota? Or should I just run down to AutoZone, they have them in stock
 
i know this thread has been dead for over a year but I'm running into an issue with finding the correct fuel injector seal kit. Some show 4 small size O rings yet when I look at the injector you can clearly see 3 different O rings. i have the 6 cylinder engine. Greatly appreciate it if someone can give me an actual mfg part number. Even the guy at NAPA was confused! :redbrick:
 
I just went to O'Reilly and the guy handed me 6 packs with 3 o-rings a piece all the same size. The o-rings are the same for both ends of the injector. Pretty standard thing I would think.
