Input shaft bearing

Hello,

I have an 85 4runner with a 22re (year unknown) and a 5-speed (thought to be original, according to po).

It has started to make a whirring noise when I let my foot off of the clutch. When the clutch is pressed to the floor, the noise goes away. I have been researching this problem and it looks like it is the input shaft bearing.

I have been trying to find a description on the web for how to replace it. I have searched this forum and haven't found anything yet. If anyone knows of a thread I could look at, please direct me.

If someone could answer the following questions, that would also be very helpful:

1) Can the Input Shaft Bearing be replaced by the average guy in the driveway, or is that something that needs to be done at the shop?

2) Does the transmission case have to be separated in order to replace the bearing?

3) How much damage does a guy do driving it for a while before the bearing is replaced? I have another car, I just would like to run it every now and then to keep it battery, fuel system, etc. in shape until the weather gets a little warmer, if I am going to do this in the driveway.

The input shaft bearing doesn't ring any bells. You have two bearings near the clutch. One is the pilot bearing, that is installed on the back end of the crank and the shaft of the transmission slides into it. That one (if bad) will make noise regardless if you have your foot on the clutch or not. The second is the throwout bearing, this one is installed on the shaft of the transmission and is moved by the clutch fork when you push down the clutch pedal. The throwout bearing is what pushes down the springs on the pressure plate and disengages the clutch so you can shift. The throwout bearing can make noise will make noise if you take your foot off of the clutch. That is usually a good indication that it is getting ready to fail.

In order to swap either of the bearings, you'll have to remove the transmission. It's not a hard job and if you have any mechanical confidence you can drop the tranny and swap the bearings out in a few hours, less if you have air tools. If you're pulling the tranny I would be prepared to replace the clutch and resurface the flywheel as well. It may not be necessary but since it's all apart and if the clutch is getting low on its life, it may not be a bad idea. But I would definitely replace the pilot and throwout bearing.

You can definitely do this in your driveway, but if you've never removed this (or any other) transmission, you might get another "average guy" to give you a hand.

With the trans out, you can get to the input shaft bearing by removing the bearing retainer and snap ring, but I don't think you can get the bearing out without separating the case.

I've gone thru a number of transmissions over the years (esp the piece of crap L52). I drive it until it's really bad.

Just did my clutch and throwout bearing, ended up not replacing the pilot bearing since it was still in good condition. Fun fact: ensure you install your new throwout bearing in the correct direction and is always a good idea to just get a new flywheel (or resurface) since you have everything apart. Can also do the rear main seal while you're back there if it is leaking at all. Feel free to post up more questions if you need/want help on step by step directions.
