Insane temp needle behavior

Howdy, I've got a 2000 Limited that has been awesome despite the usual maintenance needed for it's age. The one thing I can't figure out are crazy temp needle fluctuations. Sometimes when I step on the gas, it straightens out, other times it doesn't. Seems to drop dead at idle sometimes and then go all over the place. I don't believe that it is the sensor because it measures smoothly using the torque app. Is this indicative of a poor connection or something wrong with the needle in the gauge cluster? Never seen anything like it. I will upload a video showing it shortly. Thanks for any insight!

There are two coolant temperature sensors, the engine coolant temperature sensor (connects to the ECU, critical for fuel and idle control) and the engine coolant temperature sender (connects only to the dash gauge). Your sender seems to have gone bad, since the ECU is seeing the correct temperature readings.
