I am planning to buy a '06 4runner tomorrow; V8, 4x4, Sport Package, 105k miles. I am having a mobile mechanic service check it out in the morning. It seems like the only big possible problem is the exhaust manifold crack. Are these easy to see upon inspection? Would I be better taking it to a Toyota Dealership that may have more experience with this issue?
From what I am reading, first I should listen for a ticking sound after a cold start, and that it would go away after a few minutes when the headers heat up.
Also, the crack is most likely near the flange? Not sure what that means, would the mechanic know if I told him to look there?
And, it could be louder in reverse. Not sure why, but will check this out for sure.
Any thing else to look for on a V8? He is going to put the computer on it as well to see if any codes pop up. Thanks so much!
