Installed LED running board lights

i'm not sure if anyone asked this yet but does it light up the whole time or when you open the door or what? i've been planning this for awhile but i want it to turn on when i open the door. just didn't know where i should wire it to. i've had several projects with LEDs but wasn't sure how to power it up. thanks.

I've added them to mine and did a writeup a while back. I connected them to my ignition ring. They act just like it does. When you unlock the doors, they come on, when you shut the doors, they stay on for like 15 seconds or so and dim out. When you lock the doors, they turn off.

Read through that thread about the wiring and that should clear up a few of your questions.

Hey thanks. But unfortunately, i have a 3rd gen. so most of the stuff you said is different. It's a great idea to put it in the ignition though. I'll see if i could do that whenever i can. Maybe i'll make a write-up whenever i could too. I'm using several LEDs facing downward rather than the side. Hopefully it'll work out great.

You used regular bulbs, not LEDs, right? I like the idea that yours are enclosed but thinking that the LEDs would be different.

Actually I originally used super white 6-led bulbs that I bought from superbrightleds, but didn't like the bluish tint to them. I then decided to make my own using warm white leds. Although I don't specifically have pictures of the running board custom leds, I did them very similar to this thread. If you have any particular questions, let me know and I'll try to help you out.

thanks for reposting this link, I'm going to redo mine, and remembered reading this thread. but I couldn't find it again!!

When you redid your running boards, did you do something similar as the doors? So the running board lights do come apart? Hope so!!

I got a 100 superwhite LEDS sitting in the garage just waiting to go somewhere

Keep in mind that I did not have stock running board lights, I added them after painting them. I don't know if the stock lights will seperate or not.

I used 9 leds for the running boards (3 circuits of 3 leds each) and used 18 leds for each door light.

oh that's right, forgot you didn't have the stock lighted boards. If the weather ever actually warms up, I'll go out there and crawl under and see if mine do. I hope they do, would really like to do something like you did on the door with those.
