Installing a 2.5" OME Lift, Question about Tire Size

Question about tire size since I'll be replacing the stock tires and wheels. I'm sure this has been discussed before but I'm a noob and would really appreciate your guys' advice.

Ideally I'd like to go with the Wrangler Duratrac 285/70/17D but was advised that these could rub and would need to do some "cutting away."

If that's the case, maybe something smaller, say 265/75/16C. I'm a wknd warrior, live in the city but get up to the mtns pretty frequently on the wknds, so I do both on and off roading. Ultimately I'm not really set on a brand or size so that's why I'm hoping to get suggestions from this board.

Slee Off-Road in Golden, CO will be doing the install as I don't have the time nor the knowledge to do it myself.

Should be fine with the 285s. Might rub on your UCAs if you're running stock wheels, so you might want to look into spacers or an AM wheel, but you'll only rub when you're stuffing the tires wheeling.

Coopers are a brand i want to try in the future that are reviewed excellently (COOPER AT3) and duratracs are tried and true. Nitto's are pretty awesome too. Theres too many good choices dude

What is the size you plan on running 33s? I could never tell how to read tire sizes and know if its a 31" or 35" etc.

Yeah, as ignorant I am about mods and parts (for instance, I had to google UCA = Upper Control Arm) I knew one was 17 and the other 16... guess I should probably decide on wheel size first. Thinking 17 over 16.

In my opinion, the 17's look great on these vehicles... I like my 17's much more than most 16's I have seen. However, the tires are a bit more spendy.

With the 285 duratracs rubbing will be minimal, as will the modifications necessary to get rid of the rubbing.

a 285/70/17 or 285/75/16 is ~33".

a 315/70/16 or 315/75/16 is ~35".

Thanks mang, this is really helpful. I'll prob go with the 285 Dura Tracs, may look at the Nitto Grappler for comparison. And then it's onto choosing 17" wheels...

I have BFG AT 265/75/16 on stock wheels and they just look too small on the runner now with the lift. Wanting to run 285/75/16or17

I'm curious and KentuckyChunder might want to know too when looking for aftermarket wheels. Is there a certain wheel anyone knows of or a backspacing measurement that will allow 285s without wheel spacers?

Just an FYI...it also depends on what trim your 4-runner is. With my limited, due to the bigger flairs, with my Toytec 3" lift + 1" body lift I STILL get very minor rubbing after doing the pinchweld stuff and trimming the flairs a bit. Not trying to scare you and many, many on here run 33" tires with no issues. Look through my build thread and you can see pictures of what I had to do to make everything work correctly. I believe the wheel spacers are my biggest culprit that has caused the rubbing on the front. I would personally go with the 285's and trim away (that's what I did and LOVE it)

I haven't looked into this issue too much, but the rep at FN Wheels assured me that, with 285s on the 17 Konigs, there wouldn't be any UCA rubbing, but possibly the fender. He said wheel spacers aren't necessary with the Offset: -10mm Backspacing: 4.1"

I'm still debating between 265 and 285.

Thats good to know. I've been wanting to know further about this. The main thing would be UCA rubbing. Anything else would be just minor stuff.
My vote is for the 285s. I'm sure you would be much happier with them. I had 265s on mine when I got the lift and still do as of now. The first thing I thought when I looked at it on the ground was, man those tires look small.

A buddy of mine runs DuraTrac 265s and said they are the equivalent to a 32" tire (bigger than the stock tires even though they are the same listed size) on his Taco.

Just my 2 cents- I just installed the same lift mentioned in the OP along with 265/75/16 Duratracs. No rubbing on or off road. I also installed some 1.25" Spidertrax wheel spacers which gave me a little rubbing when making sharp turns. This went away when I installed a 1" body lift the next day. Some may disagree but I dont think the 265s look small with this setup, although ill probably go with 285s next time just because I can. Check my build thread for pics.

Any consideration for gearing as well load range? I have BFG ATs dry rotted 265s on 17 Tundra rims and might replace them with 265 Kelly Safari TSR or Cooper S/T 265s C range. Seems most 265 and 285 tires on 17s are E range :-(

Plus its already a dog even with the 5 speed and 4.30 gearing, was worried about making it even slower and then having the rubbing with 285s if I am aired down and off road..so I will have to buy wheel spacers bumping up the price more 285s+wheel spacers. I am on a budget though.

Just curious...I am in this same hmm need tires this year 265s or 285s...I have the room with 2.5" lift for sure but the 265s do not bother me appearance wise although bigger tires would look cooler ha and get me over more stuff if that extra less than 1" means anything
