Installing a new Brake Dust Shield without taking the hub apart.

So, I figured I’d put this here instead of burying it in my way too long thread to make it easier for others to find.

As I noted before my old shield literally fell off from rust.

@%1; gave me a picture of where to cut a new shield to install it on the steering knuckle loosing one of the mounting bolts.

So I followed the picture and first cut

Then some trimming was required

And done…piece of cake….

I will mention those bolts that hold the dust shield on had me worried removing them without rounding them or breaking the heads off. But I had a shallow 12mm socket and used my 3/8 breaker bar and got them loose and then used a wrench for removal. There iis not is not much room for a socket and ratchet between the back of the hub and the bolt head.

What brand of backing shield did you get?
I would be hard pressed to chop up a new Toyota one.

Only one I found available was OEM. Trust me I’d have bought aftermarket if available. I looked for a two piece….

I don't think the aftermarket ones exist yet. I have never seen them yet once they discountine the oem ones. We probably have nothing. I mostly don't replace them once they rot off. I really don't know if that's good or bad. :/

It's just there to keep the rocks off the rotor... no biggie but most enthusiasts will want it on.

And too deflect most of the water when splashing through puddles on the road.
Even that, you still have to tap the brakes a couple of times to dry the rotor off a little.
So, does it work? I don't know but, some states require backing plates to be mounted or you don't get to register your ride for the next year.

If one is caught in that situation - denial of registration due to missing disk brake backing plates - claim that your beloved 4Runner identifies as a motorcycle.
