Installing a Subwoofer

I have an '04 4runner Sport Edition, with the 6 disc changer and 10 speaker JBL system. I was wondering how difficult it would be for me to install a subwoofer for a little added bass. I don't know if the HU has a preamp out or not, and I guess that was another question that I had.

If the HU does have a preamp out, how hard would it be to run an amp to it and get everything running?

What are my other options?

The JBL amp is in the cargo bay on the right side. Unfortunately there is no RCA connections.

Circuit City installed an amp tapping into the existing lines (line converter) for about $60 for me.

How well did it work. Did you lose any sound quality by tapping into the existing line? And where at exactly in the cargo bay? Well I guess my real question would be how to access this amp so that I could look at it.

So if I'm able to use a line converter to tap into the existing amp, would I still need to run all of my power cables and ground and all of that, or would that be done since it is running off of the JBL amp? And if so, would I just need to hook my sub up to the amp, and then i'm good to go?

Sorry for so many questions, I just want to make sure I know all about this before I take any actions. Thanks.

I was in a similar situation as you. I had a 2005 SE with the JBL 6-disc 10-speaker system and wanted more umph.

I bought an infinity basslink to add the added bass by tapping into the speaker level input from the JBL in the back of the truck. Eventually (two weeks later) I used the same technique to run some components through a 2-ch amp. Both need their own power and grounding. Surprisingly, Sound Quality was actually still very good. Little noise. Very clear.

Eventually I just wanted more than what the JBL 6-disc system can offer; I wanted navigation, mp3/ipod capability, and DVD movie capability.

Although my Eclipse sounds better than the JBL system with speaker level inputs I had before, it honestly is not discernable to the naked ear.

Thanks. I plan on just using a LOC to tap into the existing amp, and hooking everything up that way. It's definitely something for now. I'm glad the sound quality isn't bad either. I appreciate the feedback.

you don't always need an LOC, but the same concept is used. Some amps already have a high level input, which is basically a plug with 4 wires coming out of it (white, white/black, grey, grey/black). Either way you are tapping onto the existing speaker wires to obtain a signal. JL Audio also makes little short RCA cables with speaker wires coming out of them as well, but they are pricey.
