Installing bigger than OEM transmission cooler

Went wheeling this weekend and was keeping an eye on my tranny temp. (2008, V8) It never got super hot, but by the end of the trails it was slowly crawling up there. I have the stock cooler that comes with the tow package but wanna toss a bigger one on. Looking at the B&M 70264, but it's really not that much bigger then the OEM one. I know it's popular with the 3rd Gen crowd, and the v6 4th gen crowd, but they did not come with one from the factory so anything is better for them.

Anyone install the 70264 and was is enough? Or should I step up to a slightly even bigger?

What temperature did it reach? Were you in 4lo? Was it the pan or torque converter temperature sensor?
 
I don't recall what I added (bought from someone on here) but I added it to the existing rather than replace. It dropped tranny temps enough to keep me happy.
 
How are you reading your transmission temperatures? I know that ScanGauge can be a bit inaccurate from what I have heard.

I haven't had issues with my transmission cooler not being able to keep temperatures stable. But if you're doing a lot of slow crawling and such I wouldn't be surprised to see temperatures creep up a bit since airflow is lower.

Yes, it was some very slow crawling. When i'm just driving down the road, even towing small loads it seems to do just fine. I suspect as well it's the lack of airflow, but i'm hoping that up sizing it will help, and if not I can at least fit a fan to push some air when crawling. The OEM one is so small it would be hard to mount a fan.

Honestly the temps never reached a bad point, they just started to crawl up there a ways and I am just super particular about everything being perfect and would rather be 100% safe then sorry.

I hope to revisit the tranny temp & Scan Gauge issue before too long and try to make sense of it. I haven't gotten around to fixing my OBD port yet though.

That's a bit on the warmer side, but I wouldn't be worried; if I remember right the "ATF HOT" warning indicator doesn't trip until around 260~270*F.

It will climb/heat up when you're slowly crawling around due to lack of proper airflow. A slightly larger transmission oil cooler might help that, but honestly it's not something that would concern me too much.

The way your Torque App might be calculating ATF temperature might also be flawed/inaccurate depending on how it works.

Ive thought about installing an auxiliary fan due to the lack of airflow at slow speeds. A larger cooler won't do anything without Airflow.
