Installing Hardwired ProClip Mount Write Up

So I did some searching and couldn't really find a good write up on installing a Hardwired ProClip Mount.

Also when I saw what ProClip provided as install instructions and coming from someone who hates electrical I decided to start thinking of another way. Here is what I came up with.

First I purchased the ProClip Adjustable iPhone Charging Holder (in this case for Iphone 7 with a small case).


To mount it to the vehicle I went with the Proclip Left Mount (A-frame Pillar Mount). You can use any mount you want.

Next install your mount to the A Pillar (in this case). This comes with double sided tape on the inside. Right now I opted to not use that as I wanted to test it first. But this is the time you would remove them. See tape on the inside of the mount here:

To install simply press the mount against the pillar until it literally clips in.
Install the phone mount with supplied 4 screws and you get this:



Wiring:
For the wiring I used what was supplied and ran it down the side under the weather stripping.

I then went under the steering wheel in the foot well and snaked the wire through the firewall up to the box. This box is a USB plug that comes attached so that if you upgrade your phone you can unplug from here and add your new mount. (Sorry for the poor Picture Quality)


After running through the fire wall I ran it up to fuse relay box in the engine. I cut the wire down to the length I needed. Then I split the red and white wire and added an "Add A Circuit" to the Red wire.
This is an "Add A Circuit (Mini)" (Picture stolen from Walmart)

Here is it installed. I will be cleaning it up and adding sleeves to the wiring but this so you can see how it is all wired.


Test and Complete!


Running it this way allows for full time charging even when the vehicle is off.
So far I'm really liking this option and happy with the mount.

Nice write up, let us know how it does on the trails. I've used on an AP clip on a tablet mount and think they are best suited for a lighter application like this, although I would replace the 3m they come with

Ya I even did a IG story with it video recording and there is some shakiness to it - even with just an iPhone

But the shakiness is so unnoticeable when driving it really is nice for watching Waze or Gaia. You can just see it with video. One member here told me to try the timelapse video and that really helped with the shakiness but I would rather have real time video for the trails. So we'll see what else I do for that.

Curious why you ran the wiring through the fire wall to the engine bay fuse box? There are "always hot" fuses in the interior fuse panel that's right behind the driver kick plate.

That's how I wired my dual USB charger in the glove compartment.

As in the one by the OBDII port? If it is that one, the add a circuit would interfere with the fuse cover not allowing it to close. Some might say well just leave the fuse cover off but I wanted to keep it on there for the time being.

Just going through this thread and the proclip site right now. But it looks like it depends on the phone case you have on what will actually fit in the cradle/dock. How thick is your case on your phone if I can ask?

I don’t know, man. I’d worry about the phone becoming a projectile in an A pillar airbag deployment.

that pillar cover barely moves when they airbag comes out, i mean there is a bolt through it not much higher than that phone mount

Just going through this thread and the proclip site right now. But it looks like it depends on the phone case you have on what will actually fit in the cradle/dock. How thick is your case on your phone if I can ask?

Sorry [MENTION=84680]wadle5[/MENTION], just saw this. That case wasn't very thick, basically just a skin.

I switched to a Galaxy Note 8 and they didn't have a proclip mount for my phone so I switched to a Universal mount and that is completely adjustable. You can widen or slim it down to fit whatever case you have which is very convenient.

Still use this every day and love it! Its great for camping where I dont have to put the key in the ignition to charge my phone.

What wire did you cut down to length? The wire that is connected to the charger and USB?
When you said you split that wire, is that the wire from the charger?
What did you do with the white wire?
What size fuse did you choose for the A circuit, and why?

There was a suggestion to use the fuse box under the steering wheel, if I choose to use that, can I just wire the charger directly to the A circuit?

A few here:
What wire did you cut down to length? The wire that is connected to the charger and USB? Basically, just the wire that comes with the kit
When you said you split that wire, is that the wire from the charger? Yes
What did you do with the white wire? Grounded the white wire
What size fuse did you choose for the A circuit, and why? 2 10amp fuses. Its overkill but it is what I had in my toolkit.

There was a suggestion to use the fuse box under the steering wheel, if I choose to use that, can I just wire the charger directly to the A circuit? Totally! At the time I wanted to keep the cover on the fuse box under the steering wheel and that is why I ran it to the engine. Now, if I were to do it over, I would run it under the steering wheel.

Not sure why my pictures aren't showing up. Here they are. You can see the path of the wire in the red. It just goes under the left side of the panels, through the firewall, then to the fuse box (that is what i was referring to as "box") under the hood. All other questions answered inline.

You're not worried about the input voltage to the phone charger that the usb-connector-base would have provided?

I still kept the box that is on the wire and just zip tied it under my dash. The other end is the part that I clipped and attached to the "add-a-fuse."
