does anyone have instructions on how to get the center console off? what tools would be needed? any help is greatly appreciated. thank you.

If it's similar to a '98, here's what you do:
1. Open the console storage bin
2. Engage the emergency brake
3. Put your fingers in the emergency brake slot and pull that part of the console up and forward. No screws, just clips holding it in.
4. Pull up on the console piece that surrounds the shifter, turn it sideways and remove.
5. Remove the ashtray
6. Pull off the heater control knobs and slider knobs
7. You will need a special tool for this next step; sort of a flat tip screw driver curved at the very tip. I used a paint can opening tool. The reason you need a hook shape at the end is your going to insert the tool into the slider slot of the heat control, hook the back and gently pull it toward you. The face of the heater controls is just a press fit. This will expose two screws; one on the upper right, and one on the lower left, that need to be removed. This will allow you to remove the dash piece that encompasses the vents on top, to the cigarette lighter below. You'll need to pull the electrical plug out of the clock and the hazzard lights to free it up enough so that you can lay it on the front seat. Once off, its four screws holding in the head unit.

thanks for the quick reply. does anyone else have advice or tips. in doing this as a surprise and i basically have one shot and a 4 hour span to get it right or im screwed
as stated in the other post on this topic, get the wire harness. best buy has them for 15 or 20 bucks. i got mine from crutchfield, and i think it was closer to 5 bucks. take your time, and solder all the connections. you can even heat shrink the wires if you wish, as you can do the wiring at a desk or work bench. then, jsut plug it into the factory harness. easy to remove if you should sell the rig as well, and you do nothing to the factory wires. a piece of advice though! when doing the harness deal, now is the time to splice into the lead wire for the power antennae if you have one. do it right off the harness you have buy, before the plug. run it to a toggle. this is helpful when using the cd player. otherwise, the antennae will always be up. i installed my head unit, ran all the amp cables, and had the thing back together in about 4 hours or so. i would say even a rookie can have a head unit in within 2 hours.
