Installing Universal SWI-JACK on 4th Gen

Ok, I installed the jack in mine when I put my Kenwood in a year or so year ago, and it made no difference for the lighting, and I didn't have to do any special wiring to get it to work.

First off, the PAC doesn't supply voltage to the lighting circuits, as the steering wheel control illumination is still fully controllable by the rheostat on the dash. Granted, it looks like the ground is supplied through pin 10 at the steering wheel control (which is the white/red wire at the radio - pin 6).

How did you connect your SWI-Jack? You do need to make sure the SWI-Jack is wired up correctly though.

Look here:

The only wires you will be using from the PAC SWI-Jack are the red (power), black (ground), and white (to steering wheel control wires). Individually tape off the other wires so they don't touch each other or metal. They are not needed, and not used.

Make sure pin 6 is connected to the white wire from the SWI-Jack, and also make sure it gets grounded to a GOOD ground, verified by a multimeter.

Now that is some good stuff. Unbelievable what you know about this.

I have not connected the PAC-SWI Jack yet, nor have I bought one. I am waiting for Christmas.

I simply am having trouble understanding why I do NOT have illumination for my SW controls if the steering wheel control illumination is still fully controllable by the rheostat on the dash.

Secondly, the chart is wonderfully detailed, but I have no idea what the heck a rheostat is or does.

Bottom line, does the illum become disabled when this plug is pulled or should I still have illum and there is something wrong?

this worked well for me because i have a Avic-d3 and I had to find Illumination or else my radio would be in daylight mode 24/7. Hope this helps!

Does the D3 not have a dimmer wire in its harness? I've never heard of an aftermarket HU that you cannot connect to the 4runner's dimmer wire to give you day/night lighting.
 
Well, I cannnot speak to the D3, but I have a Kenwood KVt-512 and hooked my Kenwood illum wire up to the stock wire from the OEM harness and I cannot dim my screen via the scroll dimmer. It will only dim when I turn the lights on.
 
sounds normal to me... my JVC nav cannot be selectively dimmed. It, too, only goes from day to night mode when I switch on the lights, but fo'runna made it sound like his D3 didn't even do that.
 
what does a PAC-SWI thinga ma jiggy do for ya anyways? What is the advantage of having one?

I wish I could do all the sh*t ya'll do to your runners...but that is a whole nother world.

I would have deduced that if he had put Kenwood in front of the model.

Oh this jack would be something i need. I have a JVC HU just sitting around my house from my old truck. Actually, I have:

1-JVC deck
3-Kicker amps
1-Audiobahn amp
1-Sony 13-band EQ
1-12"Aura sub
1- enclosed, sealed (2) 12" sub box

I had two sets of MB Quart 6.5 separates but I sold them along with the truck.

One of the reasons, I purchased the 4R was to throw all this stuff in there and make some noise. But basically, the wife said her famous line " You dont need that, the speaker will take away room for my crap" She didnts say that last part, but might as well.

I really hate my current JBL surround sound 10-speaker crap. It was such a waste of energy to put that system in there. So many better things they could have done with the sound system.
 
Well it s official. The SW controls illuminate when I hooked the 20 pin plug back into the OEM stereo. The circuit must complete itself to illuminate.

I am now confident when grounding out pin 6 when installing the SWI jack the SW controls will illuminate.
 
I have not tried it yet. Why do you ask?

I can tell you that it makes sense after pluggin in the OEM radio, the controls lit right up.

So the way I read the wiring diagrams is that the radio is supplying ground through pin 6 to the C13 connector on the steering wheel at pin 10. Since C13 pin 10 is the ground for the steering wheel illumination it needs to be connected in order for the illumination to work. In that case the steering wheel illumination can't work with that 20 pin connector unplugged. Where would the illumination circuit connected to C13 get it's ground?

I just put a '06 steering wheel with audio and phone controls in my 04' SR5. I don't have have the axxess module connected yet, thus the 20 pin connector in my 4Runner is disconnected and the button illumination does NOT work, hence why I was reading this thread. :-)

On a separate note, I downloaded both the '04 and '06 wiring diagrams and neither show the wiring for the phone controls that I can find. All of the descriptions of connector C13 in both manuals show only SEEK +/-, VOL +/-, and MODE. Why the wiring for phone controls is not there I can't explain but it seems like they could use the same strategy that they used for the wire that supports VOL and SEEK. They could add resistors to support talk, hang up, and answer to the MODE wire.
