Intake air temp observations

With all the threads over time discussing how people want cold air intakes i thought I would post some air temp readings.

I am running stock intake. OEM paper filter.

Ambient air temp: 92deg, humidity 85%

Intake air temp in traffic: 106 deg
Intake air temp on highway: 95 deg

If someone with a cold air intake wants to post some temps that would be great. Overall I feel that the OEM intake does a decent job.

bumping an old thread but,
I've started getting concerned recently with the way my runner performs in traffic.
Living in south florida, after about 10 minutes of traffic driving I'm seeing air intake temps around 160F while sitting at stoplights and with only short bursts between lights the temp only drops to about 140F. There is a noticeable engine bog that comes with these high temps as well as the engine (presumable fan) noise ramps way up. Is there any real concern here or is there anything I can do about it? Ambient air temps are about 90F
Idling for extended periods of time only sees the air intake temp drop to maybe 150 if im parked in the shade.
These numbers are seen from my Headunit with the maetro RR plugged into my OBDII

I would stick a thermocouple or thermistor in the air intake and make an independent measurement. It sounds like the air temp sensor may be lying, which would explain the poor performance. The computer can't properly control the mixture if it's getting inaccurate air temp readings.

What does your intake temperature read when the vehicle has been off overnight, just after starting? Does it match the ambient temperature then?

(What is the "HCF" that you've removed?)

Overnight or anytime after the engine has cooled off or while cruising above 45mph for about 5 minutes air temp is within 7 degrees of ambient. Its almost like engine heat contributes to heating air intake temps.
HCF is an extra charcoal based "pre filter" in the top of the air box for emissions purposes

Sounds like you might be drawing air directly from the engine compartment, rather than from inside the fender well. As I recall, the inner fender liner is kind of a double wall, and the stock air intake pulls air from the space between, so it doesn't get hot air from the engine compartment. Also protects it somewhat from water when fording streams.

Obviously you'll never see intake air temp at engine less than ambient and even seeing ambient at the engine inlet will be rare unless air cleaner box is insulated and piping from it to engine is insulated. Underhood temp will always increase your intake air temp at engine inlet.
The stock setup is about as good as you're going to get.
