Intake Silencer Removal Mod

Newer to the site. Recently adopted my wife's old Runner and looking to get a little more out of the engine. I see lots of folks who run the Intake Silencer Removal Mod. the concept makes sense, however I had a question. Why do folks use steel?

To me it would seem like the steel would absorb more heat therefore mess with the temp of the air being used. Why not a plastic tube or aluminum? Does it just have to do with cost?

There is another write-up floating around somewhere that the guy used a piece of Delrin Tube. That's how I did mine several years ago, and it is holding up just fine.

I'll see if I can find the link.
 
I would just yank the whole intake off and replace with a Airaid jr kit.
Its better all around and gives you a better air filter to boot.

I have a spectra drop in already and would rather not drop a $175 on this. That money can towards mods for the GTO
 
Spectra filters suck. Cant even tell you how many i have seen the filter material falling apart and getting sucked into the motor. Thats not good for the motor or the maf if your car has one and our 4runners do. Not to mention no filter material not filtered air going to the motor, dirty air not good for the motor. Stay away from Spectra spend the few extra dollars for a K&N, AEM dryflow ect.
I am going with the Airai Jr kit.
 
Just my .2 but if your looking for HP gains that have been proven and dyno'd I would forget the ISR mod and do the deckplate mod instead... Gain just as much HP as an intake that is purchased.

I appreciate the opinion however it sounds like anecdotal evidence. I could counter with the fact that I've had the filter for quite some time with no issues and I've had friend running them without issue but there really is no point.

Back to the topic, I was considering a modification to the deck plate mod as well. I looked at the link to YotaTech however the link to the plastic is no longer carried
 
Just keep an eye on it. I had one on a 89 accord and it fell apart. I am a mechanic and see a lot if cars with the cheap autozone intakes and spectre filters that are coming apart.

I did the deck plate mod about a month ago, to be honest, I don't notice anything, and I have a scangauge and keep an eye on my horsepower while driving as well. And as far as the "plastic mod" just go on amazon, order a deck plate, it is used on boats, you will literally see dozens, take that and trace an outline around the intake box, then cut around the outline, screw the plate into it, and boom your done. Took me a total of 25minutes, and thats also with me adding silicone to make a nice seal, and painting it black.
 
Anyone expecting actual horsepower boost is going to be disappointed.

However, if you do the Deckplate Mod, Get rid of the restricting silencer, make sure your throttle body is clean as a whistle, then change your stock muffler to a much freer flowing muffler like a Borla/Magnaflow etc then you will see an improvement in gas mileage on the highway of between 1-2mpg.
You will also have a much better throttle response.
You can feel the engine breathing better.
The ever so slight gain in HP if any is so little that it makes no difference.

But everything else that it does it what makes it worth it.

If you want HP then get a Super Charger.
 
So, I read that the isr mod makes the engine louder, but i haven't read a description of exactly what it sounds like. Is it like a rumble, a roar, a whistle, hiss, Hillary Clinton singing the Love Boat theme, or something else?

I appreciate the heads up, I'll keep an eye on it.

I am not expecting much to be honest, however I have always thought the Runner was a bit laggy in terms of throttle response. Really, just looking for a little improvement, not looking for substantial gains.

I should have specified. It isnt the plastic deck plate that I was referring to but the Delrin Tube.
 
You can also use an electrical PVC conduit slip joint for the tube. I picked it up from Menards for about $20 and it works great.
 
I took a piece of 1/8" aluminum sheet and rolled it to the right size and length. then tig welded it and added a brass barb for the vacuum tube to connect to, I also replaced that tube with a silicone one.
 
a little bit of engine enamel and aluminum tube seems to be working great.

Overall not bad for $20. Throttle response is much improved, doesn't seem as lazy. For those claiming to "feel" HP gains I'd say your feeling better pedal response.
It does have a little resonance when you get on it, I'd imagine the aluminum enhances that a bit more than plastic would.
