Intake Silencer Removal

Let this thread float into the abyss if this is too noobish to reply to, but after reading Dr. Zhivago's post on the intake silencer removal (97) over at YotaTech, I still don't grasp the whole procedure. Since I have a better time understanding this forum for some reason, I was wondering if anyone wanted to do an even more lamens version of instructions.

Another quick question, would you guys opt for a 4 or 4.25" deckplate?

4" is fine enough.

This question is not n00bish, I had a tough time understanding Z at first too, but it isn't too bad at all. I did it myself and I'm a car idiot.

First thing to do is get the necissary parts for the procedure. I don't know what year you have, but you need the proper pieces to plug up the holes left by taking out the silencers. Then you need the deckplate and screws, some sort of sealant...etc

Once you have everything you need, you need to take out the intake. Unscrew the two bolts holding down the airbox and loosen any hose clamps on the intake (they are metal rings with a phillips head screw that tightens it). The airbox is loosely connected to both the fenderwell (should come out no problem) and the mass airflow sensor (MAF), which is a little cylender connecting the airbox and the tube the silencers are connected to. be careful with the MAF! make sure to unplug it!

Once the airbox is out, put it aside with the MAF and undo the hose clamp holding the tube with the silencers together with the metal intake. take off the tube and loosen the hose clamps that hold the silencers and take them all off. put in the PVC caps to replace them and retighten the hose clamps and make sure the caps have no room to wiggle. If there is a bit of movement, just do what I did (I dont have a pic but I'll post one in the morning, I'm too tired to go outside now). then back to the airbox. take the filter out. Then use a dremel or any other cutting tool to cut the hole in the front of the airbox (use the deckplate as a template to draw a circle on the box, then use that circle to cut it out). file it smooth. place the plate in and use a pen to dot where the screws will go and drill some small pilot holes. put a ring of sealant where the plate will rest and pop that sucker on, then screw it down. the next important step is to vaccum the crapola out of the inside of the box so that no rogue shards of plastic find their way into the combustion chamber. this is the step that took the longest for me.

clamp all the crap back together and off you go. make sure to reset the EFI.

I don't know if that is much easier to understand, maybe explain one certain part that you cant figure out and I can be more detailed...

Specs on the pvc end caps?
Dr Z was saying something about one of the hoses needing to go back to something else...maf possibly? wait..maybe he said he routed one hose to another..i'm stupid

I just finished my 4" deckplate mod and so far its pretty good.... I am still waiting to be impressed as far as low end improvements. I did however notice that the midrange was unbelieveable. If you step on the gas from 0-30MPH, at 3000 rpm's you can really feel it.

the great thing is that it really doesnt affect low end, so if you are cruising, there is no loud droning noise. it only really shows itself if you open up the throttle.

As far as the PVC caps go, I will pull my car in the garage today and take them out and look at the specs. Just for you.

The three peices are:

for j-pipe : 3/4" X 1/2" PLUG

for bottom : 1 1/4" PLUG

for big hole: 1 1/2" End Cap

As you see here, I drilled holes in the end cap and put screws in it to guarantee it doesnt slide in. The benefit of a plug is that it has a lip around the outer part, like the small one does.

as far as your hosing question, here is the stock nipple on the front of the plenum (the big metal thing on top)

Here is my modified one with the T and the extra 7/32" hose. The tube from the left was formerly connected to the silencer, the cap on the right was formerly on the nipple, and there is a 6" section of the aforementioned tube connecting the nipple to the plastic T.

the elbow removal is not needed if you do the deckplate. the elbow removal was incepted back when the 3rd gens were mostly still under warranty and people wanted a performance gain without ruining the stock appearance and being hassled by dealerships. I could probably plug up the elbow and not notice a difference, though if I did that and it started raining and I wanted to put my deckplate back on, it wouldn't work out so well for the engine...

Are you just looping the T with the silencer tube and connecting the T to the nipple?
