The last time I cleaned my Toyota TRD oiled air filter I noticed a lot (as in the entire inner surface was coated with maybe 0.5 to 1.0mm) of dirt inside of my throttle body. It started me thinking about how well my Toyota TRD oiled air filter is actually filtering. I found this interesting article today regarding testing performed on various air filters including OEM and oiled air filters. Although the Toyota TRD air filter wasn't one of the ones tested in the article other types of oiled air filters were such as K&N's.
The main take away from the article seems to be that although the K&N did initially provide less air flow resistance, "Compared to the AC (Ford OEM paper air filter), the K&N “plugged up” nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt."

Based on the marketing literature one would believe that the Toyota TRD would provide better airflow all while providing better than paper filtration. However, based on the data in this article and my own observations I plan on replacing the TRD oiled with an OEM paper.
