My 91 T4R, 3.slow auto, just developed a very interesting issue at idle. The last few times it has been started, the idle goes straight to high idle. No issues with that as it has always done that. But, instead of dropping down to 750RPMs or so after a few minutes, it goes UP to 2,000RPM.
When it does this, it will stay between 2,000RPM and 2,500 RPM but will not go lower. The engine then starts having all kinds of rough running fits when you give it gas. If you stab the throttle, it will die down to 1,800RPM before it finally starts gaining RPM at a normal rate.
The whole time this is going on, the coolant temp gauge remains at zero. You can fiddle with this issue for 10 minutes, and it still doesn't even register. Also, if you put it into gear at any time, it goes dead. It doesn't even try to pick up. It will just go from 2K straight to 0 RPM.
Eventually, the idle will drop down to a normal 750RPM or so, the temp gauge comes to life, and you can put it into gear. Does anyone have a clue what the heck is going on? I'm pretty well stumped.
