Interior Lighting mod

I have tackled the splashguards, running boards, roof rack, tinted windows, horn, and now wanting to take on the interior lighting (especially cargo area!)
:zoom:
Like to take on the mod from one of the forum members located here:
Toyota 4Runner LED Lighting

Anyone know or has anyone taken the time to see if Toyota used the same factory bulbs in the 2010 as in previous years? If not I will take apart the areas and start.

Anyone have a good way to add a light over the cargo area in addition to the ones on the hatch. Can I just get the light over the back seat and cut it into the headliner or do I need a bracket to hold it on place?

Ok, sooooo, back to the interior mod/OEM bulb question thingy...

Nope, You will be the first Shawn, a pioneer in 5th Gen. int. lighting!!I had the Tailgate lights out but did'nt write down the part numbers but can get those. I'm pretty sure all the lights will be common part numbers to cross to LED's.

I can get all the exterior bulb part numbers if you can get the interior. I just replaced my headlight bulbs today with some PIAA Extreme Super Whites. Man, these bulbs were a pain to change.
The headlights and fog lights both take H11 bulbs on the 5ths.I have some PIAA 510 Crystal Ion Fog lights to go on too.PIAA lights are who I usually use for light upgrades. PIAA I will see if they have LED replacements for the turn and tail lights.

Great idea - had not considered doing exterior until now.
I'll work on it tomorrow morning and post here.

I noticed that as well, wish there was more light over the cargo area, not sure how to gain it though? I was surprised how dim the rest of the interior lights seem to be as well. Last SUV was a lot brigher inside when the doors were opened.

The front map lights are 194's. I replaced with superbrightleds.com WLEDX6.

I hope you get better life out of the WLEDx6 than I did. Half of mine (out of a dozen) are partially or completely dead after a year or so.

Take this one step at a time but the interior lighting should be fixed by upgraded bulbs (although lifespan of bulbs may be in question - but worth the extra brightness.?)
The cargo area may need to be modded to add a lamp in the "4th Gen" location.
I am going to work on the lights and then the mod.

I love boo...I mean bulbs. :girl:

Heck yes, that helps. Thanks for passing the info!

No problem. Good luck!

I found that putting the new LEDs in really brightened everything up. Maybe you wont have to install new light in rear cargo after LEDs?

If so, let us know what you did!

bflan so those led's you referenced fit in the map, dome, and tailgate door by just plug in play? I also noticed there were several 3022's which one specifically did you get or is compatible.. Thanks

Yes, they are the same bulb type, just LED instead of filament. I used the 3022X9 to get the most light I could, but I believe any of them would work. Any bulb that replaced the DE3175 will fit. DE 3175 is the factory bulb type in the 4runner for the dome and tailgate. So cross reference that and anything you find will fit.

I will try it out and let everyone know. I am about to drive across country - relocate. I will have to put this on hold till then, unless I get lights in the mail on time.

whats the best way to get behind the glass? do you have to pop out the whole package using like a flathead or does the glass just pop out..figured id get some ideas prior to doing something stupid

The map light area you will need to open the "sunglass" area and unscrew two phillips screws and then pull unit straight down (two tabs on the other end - ). This will give you access to the bulbs.

The Dome light clear cover just pops off with a little finesse.

The rear hatch covers I had to work on. Seems like the whole unit pops out with the clear cover attached tabs. I worked the plastic cover ever so gently until the unit popped free.

rog sounds good thanks man, i just ordered a dome oznium 5" x 1.5" cool white led couldnt really decide on what color between white and cool white figured the white would be too powerful so am giving it a shot. I guess for the map lights and rear hatch lights i'll go with the wedge HD to replace the 194's not really seeing any in cool blue so i may have ot just go white..which is not really what i want to do

Just the maps are the 194's. The rear hatch are festoon bulbs, DE3175.

Also on the map lights, you can just pop the clear covers off and pull the bulb out. No need to pull the whole tray down.

Well, hell that would have saved me some time! :redbrick:

Good to know for when bulbs come in.
Well, you know how to drop the tray (maybe you could run DC wire for radar detector or gps...hmmm)
