Interior Lighting mod

The rear hatch covers I had to work on. Seems like the whole unit pops out with the clear cover attached tabs. I worked the plastic cover ever so gently until the unit popped free.

Could you give me some more detail on this? Did you work from two sides or just one? Should I be ready to catch the damn thing or is it wired in? I've got all the lights replaced except for these...

You could always wire up your own. Very easy, very simple. Order the LED bulbs on eBay , resistors are dirt cheap, and pick up a soldering iron.

Below are some I did for my 300ZX. Yes, they're green. It goes with the whole '85 digital dash gig. They have every color under the sun.

On the left side (as you look out the back window) I worked the light cover from the topside until the clear cover popped free. However I noticed, once the cover came free, the clear plastic cover had tabs (two top, two bottom) that secure plastic cover to light housing and there was a spring clip on the right side of light housing (which holds the whole unit in place.) The unit is wired in and will not come crashing to the ground, however, caution should be used, especially with the clear cover tabs.
If you have something thin and are able to slip in on the right side of light (speaking of the left door light) you will be able to pop whole housing off, otherwise, as I have done a couple times, work the top of clear cover and pop the lens off.
Hope this helps.

haha yeah I know exactly what you mean. I used came at it from the outside angle with pliers and kinda pulled down but toward the middle as well if that makes sense. I was worried about breaking them and spent a while on the first one, but they are pretty durable and once I got the first one out the second one took me two seconds.

well i got them the 1st bulb definitely crashed and burn the bulb exploded tho made it a LOT easier to get out. 2nd bulb didnt break and got it out and i was also a lot smarter to put a shirt behind the pliers to not ding up the plastic case like i did on the first. The new led's loook schweeeeetttt

I would rec. going the long way and pulling the unit down (two phillips screws in the "sunglasss" area and tabs on the other end.) Once screws are out pull unit straight down. You will have access to back of bulbs from there (unscrew bulb holder.)

Anyone know anything about the door lights? I hadn't even noticed them before but popped out the unit today and it looks like the same bulb as the map lights. The bulb is enclosed in some kind of extra case after you pop the unit out that I couldn't figure out. Granted I spent about 2 minutes looking at but wondering if anyone has already done this swap... Thanks!

Yeah, maybe I will look at doing that too. I replaced the map, dome, and back door bulbs already. I think I am going to have to add a cargo light to the mix, probably in the same area as the 4th gen's. The back door light, even with the leds, just aren't doing it for me.
Have to work on this once I relocate to NC in the next two weeks---.

Think you are speaking of lights on mirrors (bottom) that turn on when car is unlocked? Does anyone know how to access these bulbs? Do you pop off lens or is there something with mirror itself?

No, I was talking about the lights on the bottom of all four doors. Kind of like step lights I suppose. I pulled them out and popped off that extra case I was talking about and it takes the same bulb as the map lights.

i have yet to locate these lights on the doors you speak of...however i have installed my ultra thin oznium led dome light and my wedge map lights and it looks awesome. Next is the rear hatch...

The leds do look great afterwards - best thing I have done yet. Now if I can figure out how to get at the bulbs on the mirrors I'll be set.

If you have an SR5 they are not there, but theyre is a plastic black cover part. Im going to pop it off soon and see if the wiring for the light is there

Surely I'm not the only one with these... Sorry for the crappy phone pics, they upload humongous.

Notice the "cool white" color in the background from my newly installed leds! Still can't believe I missed these door lights...

Checked my SR5 and see there is a spot for these lights (a cover there now - maybe a future mod to tackle!) You must have a Limited or Trail.

I guess I'll stick with the mirror "foot" lighting instead. Someone chime up if you get access to the bulb.

I was thinking of getting another center dome light and putting it in the headliner in the rear where it seems like there should have been one.

Where's the best place to order toyota parts?

I have an SR5 and I HAVE these lights, so I do not think it is a TE or LE thing. I have the leather package, wonder if they are included with that? I went to the garage to double check before posting this, and yes, they are there! :)
