Interior lights do not come on when door opens.

I just picked up my 4runner a few weeks ago and when I open the doors, any of the 4 doors the dome light does not come on. I have the light set to door and it won't come on. I know the light works because when I put it to the on position it comes on, just won't come on with the door. I checked the fuses, under the hood and under the dash and all the fuses are good. The back hatch one works and lights up when the hatch is opened but the interior one does not light up. Anyone else have this problem before? Is there anything I can do to fix this? Possibly a switch or relay somewhere? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Each door has a switch, located on the body near the latch. It's behind a little black "boot". Open the door and move that boot (and the switch behind it) with your finger...chances are, the light will flicker.

All 4 switches in my '99 are "sticky". Meaning, I have to wiggle them in order to trigger the light.

They can be replaced.

If the light doesn't work for ANY of the 4 doors, it is hard to believe that the individual door switches are causing the problem. Pull the dome light out, take a look around in there see if anything looks unusual. Double/triple/quadruple check that the switch is on door mode. You wouldn't believe how many customers I banged with half hour labor charges when they SWORE the switch was set to door...

Hmmm, I'll have to remember to stay away from your shop. Where was it you said you were  .

maybe u could pull the cargo one out plug it into the front one and if it works then the other one is no good

Hard to believe? I guess so, but I'm not making it up. I think the switches just get sticky over time...or if they don't get used a lot.

I've got the same problem on my 1998. I just bought it a few weeks ago and no dome lights (front or rear) come on when I open the doors or hatch. But, all lights will turn on when switched to ON position.

I had a similar problem in my previous car, but it was the door switch and only happened with 1 door. Also, when I leave the headlights on, the warning noise sounds when I open the door, so I know the switch is working.

I'd have to agree that it's the door switch. Mine drives door seems to be intermittently working now. The passenger side works all the time. The rear two doors and hatch I can't to work at all.

So I know this post is old, but I was running into this. I was able to wiggle the plunger enough to get a door chime, but no dome light in "door" setting.
Other thoughts?

You can remove the switches and pull back the rubber boot. Then clean the contacts with alcohol or contact cleaner. That should do the trick.

Interior lights not working when opening doors

Just figured out why the lights don't work when opening doors or hatch. All my other vehicles are set to work when switch is in the center position. On my new addition a 2007 4Runner 65,000 miles, the switch was set to the middle position as well. The switch needs to be pushed all the way to the right (passenger side). The switch is set up from left to right in the following order "on", "off", then "door". Hope this helps, it has bugged me for 5 weeks.

I am replying to this thread because I apparently don't have permission to create a new thread. I have a different issue with my 2007 TR4 Sport Ed, V6. When the switch for the interior light on the ceiling over the front seats is set to door, it turns on regardless of whether any of the 4 doors is open or closed. Similarly, when the switch for the luggage compartment light at the back of the cabin is set to door, the light turns on regardless of whether the lift gate is open or closed.

The courtesy lights in each of the four doors turns on when the door is open and turns off when the door is closed.

If I'm looking at the correct wiring diagram (and reading it correctly), each switch in a door is connected to the body ECU. When the door opens, the door switch pulls the line to ground.

The interior and luggage compartment light are provided with power regardless of switch position. When the switches for those lights is set to door, the other line to the light is connected to the ILE 13 pin of the body ECU. I assume the ECU pulls this line to ground when a door is open.

It looks like my issue is a bad ECU. I'm looking for input from someone with more experience than me as to whether this makes sense or if I'm overlooking something.

Thanks in advance.

You could get better responses for your 2007, if you direct your question to the 4th gen section.
