Interior Roof Rack

I have plenty of headroom on my cab so I like the idea of an overhead storage. I would not want a "hard" rack like O.P. shows.

I like the idea of this "soft" rack to hold only soft items like sleeping pads, sleeping bags, clothes, tarp, etc. I will use a wider net and a foam core or anti-fatigue mat (same as in picture) above the cargo net to make it a little rigid to minimize sag, yet stay safe.

An additional advantage of the overhead storage holding soft items and covering a wider area is it would add some insulation from wind noise from the roof.

On a side note, the mounting bolts for my first-gen penetrate the roof, so aside from the existing cap mounting bolts and the roll-bar, I have lots of solid tie-in points for the soft rack...

It will be secured, I won't be zip tying an ax or a hammer to it, it won't be mounted so low that I can't see out the back window

you should also probably pull your headliner out and make it charcoal grey so you don't see all the marks that it will get from putting shit up there

charcoal grey headliner has been on my list for a while now...

I get nervous about shit like that. In high school I was in a car crash after hockey practice and the sticks in the back blew up the front windshield. Luckily they hit the windshield, and not one of us in the back of the head.

Maybe I'm a *****, but a metal rack, at head-level, just sounds like an accident waiting to happen if you have passengers in the back seats.

If I had to modify it, I would move it to the back because I'm 5'9" and the net is right above my head. 6 foot friend was in the 4r and had to hunch down during the ride. Like I mentioned in the thread, great use of space for light stuff during road trips, wife loves it. Definitely get fj drings to replace our hoods in the back, a lot stronger

OK maybe a hatchet is safer... that AR15 is gonna kill someone LOL. I remember your post. I would just prefer a more solid rack. Might look for something in ABS plastic
