Interior scratches in plastic

So I looked at a dealer demo 2012 TE with 10,000kms on the odo. Everything looks good on it and then I look in the back.......

The back area is scratched up pretty bad all over, like someone kept throwing their golf bags in there and not caring about it. A few scratches I don't care about, but almost every piece of plastic back there has multiple scratches plus a few small gouges. Even the toneau (rear cover) metal is scratched. I'm told I'm getting $4000 off because it's a demo, but I think $4k covers the mileage, NOT the interior damage. I don't even know how that gets fixed, I don't think it can be. Touched up and hidden somewhat, but that's probably best case scenario. I'm so disappointed right now....

Well push them a bit on price. At the end of the day who cares about some scratches in the back, realistically you could sand the plastic with some mineral spirits. For 5 or 6 grand off MSRP (on a TE especially) I would take some scratches any day.

I sometimes wish I got a TE instead, you should snap up that deal before its gone! (Or else I am driving to Regina to trade my Limited in on it )

The rear plastics are extremely soft, it's only a matter of time before they get banged up from use. The only person who will notice it is yourself or someone else putting stuff in the trunk. If it bothers you that much, you should factor in replacement plastics with the purchase.

Get invoice price for a new TE and start from there. It depends on demand in your area but you might be able to get better price for a demo especially if it had scratches in the trunk area. Based on my experience with SR5 I expect that new TE might be bought a least for $2000 off the MSRP, but you need printout with invoice price as a solid ground for negotiations. If you finance extra $2k would be about $35 a month which is probably not that bad considering you buy a truck with 0 mileage and no scratches.

Take the opportunity to carpet the rear (top to bottom) in an avocado green shag rug. Make that TE a shaggin' wagon.

If you actually plan to use the cargo area, it's going to get scratched. i use mine all the time, and it is scratched to all to hell. It happens. Good luck with the Sale

I suppose I don't have to worry about scratching the back then... My scratches will be hidden by all the other ones

I had a 2010 Salsa Red TE. I liked the truck, but it wasn't my first choice in color by a longshot. Everyone thought I was driving a Ford Explorer for some reason...:wow: Traded it away in the summer and regretted it BIG TIME! This new one is silver and I'm getting $7500 off MSRP all together... Why oh why can't we get a bright (non pearl) white like the 2008 FJ TT.

I'd buy in the US and import saving 5-10 grand, but not everyone is in that position..

Other than replacing the scratched plastic pieces, an experienced pro would use heat, filler and respray with dye. Only for experienced.... may be tough to find in Regina... maybe get them to replace the worst panels...

I like silver quite a bit, but when my wife saw the red my opinion became as relevant as usual (not needed). She laughed when I reminded her that we agreed I got to choose the color. She then reminded who I slept next to and who I could be sleeping next to if I wanted to "assert" my supposed authority.

The price of marrying above one's grade sometimes comes down losing rights to color choice. In the end, I quite like the red.

Buying in the US is great for savings, but I have heard stories about Canadian dealerships refusing to honor warranties. What is happening with Toyota regarding that?

Big fan of the Silver as well, but I am slightly biased

If anyone makes that mistake, I'll tell them "you can tell its not a Ford because it isn't in the shop."

I'd take it scratched. No joke, but it is somewhat liberating (not necessarily preferred) having it that way. You won't have to obsessively worry about putting things back there that might scuff something.

I'd not be disappointed; take it with a little added character.

No problem with Toyota, some other brands don't honour warranty like Honda..

The US spec Trail can be had with KDSS and Navi.. I'd get that one, it is not available in Canada and will hold a premium.

The plastic scratches really easily. Slightest contact with anything and it turns a weird greenish tint. You will get over it. It scratches so easily it's not even worth worrying about. And you know, it is a truck!

Doesn't the 2013 TE have NAV now by default? It looks like a much better head unit than the 2012 model.

Oh, and I picked her up tonight! I traded in my FR-S which had A LOT of problems. Some people in the US have received compensation for long repair times or repeat repairs, but now that I don't have the car I don't think it will happen. Plus it's Toyota Canada....
