Intermittent Hatch Switch - Please help

I think I've read all the hatch switch threads and have not seen this. Twice now the hatch has failed to open. No sound of the motor, doors unlocked. Messed with the lock buttons and checked for a mat jam. Both times it started working again after some period of time. Of course I'm worried I'll get way out somewhere and it won't open. As I understand it, the only other way to open is through the small access door inside.
Has anyone experienced this intermittent failure? Has it eventually resulted in a switch failure?

Happened to me this summer. Bad news is you have to order the entire mechanism. It's a 30 minute job.

My lock motor had an issue and a rusting striker didn't help. Some days it worked and some it didn't. I replaced it before it completely quit.

How does the rubber on the switch feel? Gummy, sticky, ect? Does the switch feel like it gets stuck sometimes when you press it?

I've seen the switches fail over time, typically the covers seem to just break down, but I have seen them fail electrically as well.

Mine was the motor, I bought a new one for around $180 and installed it myself.

BlackWorks, the switch cover has been sticky for about a year. I put some tape over it.
Switch does not feels like it is sticking but could be.
The other part of this is I have a Toyota extended warranty (07 4RL). I'll have to talk dealership into fixing something that I 'say' is broken.

The reason I ask is sometimes they start getting sticky/stiff when the rubber fails and you may push on the switch but the switch just doesn't move enough to make contact (I've also noticed they sometimes seem to fail as the rubber deteriorates.)

I will see if I can get some wiring diagrams so you can test the switch and such sometime this week if time allows at work.

threadjack: do you know the part number for that rubber cover? in the summer mine is all sticky and gross, in the winter its stupid stiff and very difficult to open the hatch.

Not sure if the rubber can be had separate from the switch assembly.
