16 trail, non-premium, manual HVAC. 40k-ish miles. Recently (past 30 days) we've been hearing a high pitched whistle that lasts about 2 seconds coming from the area near the HVAC panel while the vehicle is running. I can't make it happen, it seems to occur randomly.
It sounds like the noise these things make when you shut them off but higher in pitch and coming from behind the dash vs the engine compartment. Seems to be independent of the HVAC vent setting, the AC just needs to be on. Sounds almost vacuum or AC evaporator related.
In another car or one with auto climate control, I'd think it was blend door noise but searching through these forums for a while I wasn't able to find any other threads that seem to discuss this exact sound. It doesn't sound like the "gurgling" or "servo" noise videos I've seen in my googling either.
Doesn't impact braking, happens brakes on or off, sometimes in park at idle, while driving on the highway, waiting at a stoplight etc. No issues with the HVAC center vents, no CEL or any drivability issues. Happens when HVAC is in fresh air or recirc.
