where is the trail im tryin to figure out if i recognize any landmarks in the backround im goin to highriver to pick up my 2013 t4r te tommarow but dont think im gonna go anything like that for awhile unless my samurai breaks down!
 
Well, I'm not sure what the wheeling is going to be like the rest of this summer. The floods have really taken their toll (if you don't know what I'm talking about see http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/144705-thoughts-prayers-going-out-alberta-canada.html) wiping out highways and bridges in the area. A few of us went for a drive to see how things looked.

Normally you could wade across this river if you knew what you were doing or easily cross it at a narrow point.

Next we took a trail to the back side of Elbow Falls. Access to all the other trails was blocked so we decided to take a look at the falls. This used to be a very easy trail that anyone could take a stock truck through. Not any more. I didn't get any shots of the really gnarly stuff, but let's just say there were a couple spots where we tested the rollover points of our trucks.

The trail came to an abrupt end here.

This area used to be a gravel loop that people could turn around in and use as a parking lot to hike the rest of the way to the falls. It's completely gone now. Behind the trees in the distance is where the actual river runs. This was all caused by the same river in the earlier pics. The only good thing is that people won't be driving their quads up and down the river, at least not for a while.

Went out to do some more post-flood exploring today and it doesn't look good. Our trail system is pretty much a write off until major repairs are done. We could not get through any of the trails without hitting an impassable obstacle.

The FJC actually couldn't get me out. I had to winch off the LC with a pulley then have him pull me the rest of the way out when the winch hit its duty cycle.

That was where we turned around and headed back out. Not sure at this point when I'll make it out again or where. Pretty sad day overall.

[MENTION=66300]Intruder[/MENTION] yes it's sad. I live "up on the mountain" and the folks here that live "down in the flats" next to rivers, streams and creeks have this happen a lot here in WV. It's just nature's way of cleaning house I suppose. Makes you realize how insignificant we are compared to nature. What you guys need to do is what we do: Go find trails up on the mountain top! They will be fine and untouched. Great pics as always, except the pic the FJ guy took. Those guys can't do anything right lol.

Funny thing is that those trails are in the mountains in Kananaskis provincial park. Even Banff and Canmore got flooded. We had a whole combination of things that caused the flooding - ground already saturated from runoff and above average rainfall, high temps in the mountains, rain on top of the snow in the mountains, and a single day with around 200mm of rainfall. One of the trails we run goes straight up a hill and back down it and even it was damaged by all the water running downhill. Naturally since water takes the path of least resistance it tends to flow down the trails a lot.

It really is amazing how powerful water can be. All the bridges in those pictures cross over creeks that normally you can jump across or wade through and never get your knees wet. Seeing what the creeks carved out during the flood it's pretty obvious they would've easily killed anyone getting too close.

Yeah I understand. The trails we ride change after every rainfall lol. I get a kick out of those western guys with their "tread lightly" slogan. Sure, it's a good idea to keep on the trail and of course if you pack it in then pack it out. Around here though you can tread as hard as you want and in a few days all trace of you being there is gone, especially after a rain.
 
Got out today to explore another trail system for flood damage. Normally we only go to this area in the winter, but we wanted to see what changed. Sadly it was a lot.

When the trail you used to take is gone sometimes you have to find new ways through. This trail used to be an easy run for stock trucks but we had some difficulty in places.

The creek is back to normal size - about 15-20 feet across but you can see how wide it got.
