Inv4drZm's Build Thread

There are two types of people in this world. Those that can see their rear tires from the driver's seat, and those that can't.

I need new headlights

A mile and a half of dirt roads after raining all day makes your vehicle look like this. I couldn't cram the 3" MT coils underneath the body in my driveway (at least in a reasonable amount of time with my limited amount of tools and knowledge, coupled with my 21st birthday this weekend also)

Took it to a shop and had it done. :spy:
Will still need to lower the front right coilover and get it aligned but am happy with the results. The washboarded dirt road felt smooooth.

Didn't seem harsh or anything on the drive home- I can elaborate more tomorrow. And no extended brake lines, I don't have the MT long travel shocks, just the normal length ones.

That's good to know. I have the HD coils but haven't installed them yet & I was worried about having bad rake but yours seems pretty level!

Haha :lmao: I love seeing my rear tires in the driver seat! The new set up leeks great :thumb:

How are the HD coils without any weight in the back? And did u run ext brake lines as well?

Ride is better than the FJ coils in every regard. I can go as fast as my temporarily misalignment will allow through washboarded dirt roads. In no way is it "stiff" on or offroad. I'm actually surprised with how nice they ride.

I adjusted my coilovers today to gain 2.75-3" over stock coilovers and the running boards are almost level now, (1/4") taller in the front still. Will adjust them a bit further downward before my alignment to account for a little potential sagging in the rear.

Got an alignment today and will be going to Waynoka/Little Sahara tomorrow! Never been there before, but should be fun. The FJ is going too.

My dog wanted in:

Will try to get pictures and a video of me hucking a dune!!!:reddance:

Had a blast today! It was my first off-roading trip with the 4Runner and I was impressed, this thing is a tank. Not sure there are many vehicles you can comfortably drive across a state, take it blasting through the dunes, and drive back unscathed! The shocks were awesome, wish I had better video footage though, we'll see if I can edit some.

The scenery was awesome too! All the ATV people stared at us like we were a race boat driving around a lake of fisherman. Either they thought we were idiots for driving shiny vehicles or they were checking out my wheels. We saw two jeeps and an old Toyota truck there as well.

A drop-off too steep to go down so we turned around at the top.

There were some mega-dunes we didn't dare try and go up.

Installed my RCI front skid today. Tricky to get on with the diff drop I have so I may have to ditch the diff drop. Does anyone have any input on this?

Wheeler's diff drop:

Skid plate rubbing on center of differential:

Temporarily spaced the back down to fit. Doubt it would hold up to much wheeling:

Ended up using the VHT Epoxy white paint. Wanted to paint it silver to match the trim and roof rack, and silver sliders would look cooler than white ones, so I may repaint it.

I'm running into the same issue with my RCI skid laying against the transfer case/diff. I'll probably need to run spacers to lower it a tad :fear:

And do you have a diff drop too?

Mine currently makes an embarrassing rattling noise when driving in parking lots. I should have thought that out more...

I really don't want to wheel with those small spacer stacked like that and might try and fabricate some wider plates to disperse the load, but I also don't like reducing my ground clearance. Diff drop might have to go :(

Add that to the list of things needing to get done before a Moab trip in 5 weeks. Among other things:

  • Respace front skid or ditch diff drop
  • Reroute exhaust crossover
  • Fabricate 2 rear skids
  • Fabricate rear tire carrier
  • Fabricate storage/sleeping platform
  • Zero point calibration
  • Trim wheel wells more
  • Body mount chop
  • Install body lift
  • Buy and weld on sliders
  • Weld armor to lower links
  • Fix sunroof rattle
  • Extended sway bar links
  • Moving into a new house.
  • Helping my parents move into a new house.

I keep adding stuff but nothing gets done.

I can finish the tire carrier design when the 4xInnovations tire carrier spindle gets here.

Very early design:

A good use for Solidworks student edition :biggrin1::

The RCI skid at 1000lbs force on a small rock-shaped area with a deformation scale of 20. Passes at 3/5 of its yield strength in this test.

Got the spindle in and will be finalizing the design. It can hold x2 2 gallon Rotopax. Will hopefully have a buddy at work cut this out along with my skids on the plasma table once I get those designed.

Took the Yota to the sketchy (but only) exhaust shop in town to tuck the crossover pipe up above the frame crossmember for my high-clearance skidplate design and while they were at it, to delete the rear cats after the O2 sensors. I really wanted them to put in a new Y pipe too, but for $130 I can't complain too much and my skid plates will clear the low-hanging exhaust which is the main thing.

My brother had the crossover tucked up on his FJ from the same shop so I knew what to expect. What I didn't expect is the noise increase! Apparently the rear cats do as much for the noise as the rear resonator does. I hope it doesn't drone on the interstate... Sounds like a race-truck now! It should hold me over until I can afford headers and a full higher-quality stainless steel piping job.

Routed nice and high:

Is your transfer case leaking?

Is it stainless? Those welds look weird.

It had a slow drip at the rear output shaft but I had Toyota fix it a while ago. I just checked and it's not leaking, just needs washed off.

No, its just cheap aluminized steel. Maybe a step above fence steel? I probably could have done a better job bending it then the shop did....

1.5" body lift is done! Hardest part was taking the bumper off and moving the washer fluid bottle (without spilling) to get to the front body mount. I also need to make some extended inner engine bay covers. I followed the BL guide on the 120 forums which made it a piece of cake.

With the steering shaft spacer, I believe I still have almost 1" of spline engagement. It only looks like it pulled out 1/4" from stock:

Jeeze that thing looks massive! Jealous! I think I need some new front springs...

Anyways, about your exhaust. You deleted the O2's and cats, right? What did you do about the computer after that? Did you see any MPG difference?
