Inv4drZm's Build Thread

Bought a set of used CV's from a member on this forum for a great price, and ordered the tools and materials to rebuild the leaking boots. Going with All Pro and SDHQ boots, should be pretty fly. I'm reinstalling the diff drop I uninstalled a month ago if I can't get the upgraded boots to stop rubbing. Maybe if I kept the diff drop on I wouldn't have blown my boots on the trail in Colorado? I try not to think about that. The only question is if I should machine down the cup on the CV and make sure they will never bind. Got a lathe at work that would make it too easy.

Bought a used set of LCAs off Ebay and will be rebuilding with Energy Suspension poly joints and Moog greasable ball joints. Bought front wheel bearing assemblies from Bumper2Bumper Automotive on the forums. It would be a good time to weld on my spindle gussets I've been holding on to for years.

Should be a better than new IFS, and hold me over until long travel. Just trying to avoid my truck breaking on the trail 500+ miles away from home for the 3rd time. :redbrick:

Pics to come of course.

Ive been running on original OEM cv's rebooted with SDHQ boots for about 4 years now. I live in the worst of the salt belt and they seem to hold up as good or better then anything else. "knock on wood"
Also, no diff drop installed

Looks like you had a good time on your trip! Fun seeing those pictures. Let me know if you're around CO and come meet you at the trail!

Cool, my brother and I have been discussing a 3-day weekend adventure on one of the trails up there.

Good to hear. The SDHQ kit comes with inner and outer boots, whereas the All Pro kit only comes with outer boots so I guess I will decide on which outer boots I want to use when they get here.

Solid trip to Moab! I swear Kanye Creek is the worst trail in Moab. Be glad you didnt go farther. The last several miles will make you want to cry. That trail is long, bumpy, tough to navigate, and super narrow, and on top of that the end is the most challenging scary part. Glad you made it out of Moab in one piece and didnt have to limp home!

Yeah, we were told that same thing afterwards. Not real scenic for Moab and no fun obstacles.

Poison Spider the next day was a heck of a lot of fun. Little bit of everything terrain-wise.

Rotated my tires today, much needed unfortunately.

Got started on tearing down the used CV's I bought. Took as many pictures as my greasy hands would let me. Nice and hot in the garage today, and the tiny vice the previous owner of the house had installed was fighting me.

To those that have taken these apart, does the blue 'heat ring' look normal? Both the CV's had it, and on the outer joint as well. They still had plenty of grease in them and only had 112k miles. I'm not to worried about them I just wouldn't have guessed they every got that hot.

I will be machining them like what Dirt King recommends, for good measure.

Rebuilding LCA's is next on the list.

Dropping the high-quality pics right here... Gold Bar Rim trail, waterfall obstacle.
I need lockers!!

I'm just making sure the strap still works...

Whoa I've never seen this before but makes sense! I like it! Regretting not doing this when I had mine apart but currently no interference issues. Also I remember seeing the same blue heat signs in my cups so I don't thing there's any worry there.

Aftermarket vs Inv4drZm specials

I used both the SDHQ boots, the All Pro boots called for reusing part of the factory boots, which I threw away earlier and also thought was a stupid idea.

Loving your build thread, as I slowly make my way through it!

Do you have any favorite places in KS for off-roading or camping? I'm located in NE KS, and I believe there are some off-road trails but man our camping and public land options are abysmal here.

Yes there is Tuttle Creek offroad park just north of Manhattan, and there is Kansas Rocks in the southeast corner in the middle of nowhere. Throughout this thread there are pics from both locations. There is Tuttle Creek Lake right next to the offroad park with a cool dam, probably some good camping spots too.

I don't go camping much but Wilson lake is probably the best lake in the state, not very close to NE. KS.

Yeah I've seen signs for the Tuttle Creek one, never been though. My 4Runner is stock, so not sure if I could handle that place yet? It's a 4x4 though.

I've been meaning to check out Wilson Lake, and there's one other out near there, I believe near Salina, that is supposed to have great hiking trails. I typically end up at Clinton or Perry Lake, both are... well, they aren't bad but not much to do aside from walking trails or watersports.

I came across your build thread in your cv axle post on the 4th gen daily. Not disappointed. I really like how it transitions and grows from your college fund build to going pretty much all out and squeezing 35’s. Inspired to finally get that 1.5” body lift I’ve been meaning to do. Did you extend your brake lines? If so which route did you go? Any other recommendations? Great looking rig man!

You could handle some parts of Tuttle with just a durable set of tires but you would have to stick mostly to the main loop. You could try it now to get your feet wet if you wanted and check out the scenery/obstacles.

To me it seems I'm just getting started with the parts, too many mods I still want to do. But of course if you would have asked me 2 years ago where I wanted my truck to end up, I would already be way past that point by now.

I have Crown +2" brake lines ready to be installed.

This weekend:

Got the old bushings burned and pressed out of the LCA's, one step closer to putting in my Poly bushings and Moog ball joints then swapping all the parts over to my truck.

Did some measuring for some delrin body mounts laying on my creeper, then my week-old phone slid out of my pocket, hit the concrete 2" away, and got a nice crack in it's screen. Guess I won't be needing the case that's coming in the mail for it.

What spurred the solid body mounts is all the rubbing I'm getting on my rear bumper from my body and the hatch. From what I've read solid body mounts reduce body roll, so I'm hoping they will do more good than harm. I'll up the body lift 1/8" to 1.625" maybe to reduce some of the rubbing but it won't help with the rubbing on the hatch from the side plates. Also I've been getting some popping noises since I first did my body lift coming from the body mounts. I re torqued all the body mount bolts which helped a little so far but I don't think it has solved it permanently.

If the solid mounts don't solve the rubbing 100% then I will look into stiffening the frame more. A partial internal roll cage would be pretty cool, I could fabricate it myself, and it would stiffen things up a ton, but I will need to delete my sunroof and find a headliner from a non-sunroof 4Runner to get extra room above the front seats.

Something like this:

The rear fuel tank plan is coming together, it should be pretty easy to fit a 21 gallon tank in the back without cutting anything. 25-28 gallons potentially, if I trim some of the floor supports under the cargo area. Using a module such as this should allow me to match any fuel sender to my factory fuel gauge which will keep things nice and OEM feeling. Just need to draw up the tank in Solidworks and find a shop to send it to to get fabricated, with the design constraints being:

  • Plenty of room behind the rear axle to move it back a few inches when I do my 4-link setup.
  • Also enough room for a larger axle housing, ECGS D60 maybe.
  • Uses the stock filler location on the body.
  • Needs room to route a filler tube, vent for the filler tube, and evap vent.
  • Need to mount the charcoal canister and valve out of the way to where the factory fuel tank sits.
  • Needs to adapt to the factory supply and return fuel lines somehow.
  • Easy mounting solution.
  • Might need to reroute exhaust.

None of this stuff is that expensive, just a lot of time... But it should be worth it for a ton of belly clearance, an awesome rear suspension setup, stiffer frame, and potentially extra fuel capacity.

Also, I'm saving up for a Lexus IS300 at this point to use as a daily driver so I can hack my truck apart for more than just the weekend. I foresee a lot of hacking.

I would SERIOUSLY consider putting anything other than OEM components in your LCA's. You're going to absolutely destroy the MOOG components.

The Poly bushings I mentioned above are Energy Suspension parts. May not last as long as OEM rubber on the streets but when working the suspension quite a bit they won't deflect as much and will allow for unlimited travel.

The ball joint is Moog but you can't buy OEM lower ball joints and the Moog ones are greasable and don't have a boot that will seep like OEM so in my opinion a better design than OEM. Pretty sure they are good parts unless someone has a different opinion on that?

I heed the above advice on OEM as much as possible too, Moog bushings and tie rods were junk for me but I like the design of the new style Moog BJ so I've been giving it a chance as well since there's no OEM option. Poly bushings are squeaky! but so tight, I wouldn't have it any other way now. Interesting about the body mounts, reminds me I need to retorque mine after my body lift a couple years ago....

Awesome build you have here

I also live in Kansas too and I've been to Tuttle Creek in a few different vehicles. My new 4runner is not ready for it yet though, street tires and no skid plates. But my XJ is good to go, except it overheats pretty easily after my last trip to Colorado.

Just saying high, maybe I'll have my 4runner ready for Tuttle Creek one day
