Inverter, deep cycle battery questions.

The past couple of weeks I have been designing / building a rear cargo box and folding sleeping set up for my 4runner. The box can stay there full time but the sleeping platform folds up and comes out allowing use of the rear seats. I would like to add a inverter to the side of the storage box, but somehow have it run off a separate deep cycle battery. From the Googling and forum searching I have done it would seem that I will need to upgrade my alternator and run new wires etc. My question to you guys is having any of you done this? Any tips or advice before I go down that path?

I used a sure power battery isolator. I put the second battery in the back with a battery box to run all of the extra lights without killing my primary battery.

Did any of you guys run an inverter right from the second battery?
