iPad in Dash?

Anyone thought about trying this to their 3rd gen? I first saw this done on the Nissan Titan Forum, back when I used to own one. It'd be a pretty cool mod...if anyone on here were so inclined. Here's a video of the iPad Mini I found: FIRST EVER IPAD MINI INSTALLED INTO DASHBOARD OF A CAR - YouTube

Anyway, I've officially been a poseur on this forum for a year now. I've been holding out for a buddy of mine to sell me his '96 Limited 4x4. Supposedly, he'll be ready to sell by the end of this year (@$$hole better hurry, I'm getting antsy). Anyway, I'm hoping someone bites and actually does this mod! Hope I'll be an "official" member soon.

I've been trying to figure out where to install one of those Nexus 7's myself. If I can figure out a place it'll look good, and do what I want it to do while there, I'll go for it and put up pics and a write up. But it's pretty far out on the horizon. Tons of more important things to deal with first.

IMO the factory DIN slots are not an adequate spot for such a device. You might be able to squeeze an iPad mini in there but.... I think they sit too low, have the shifter kind of in the way, and don't have any angle facing the driver (both vertical or horizontal angle). I guess anything is possible, someone could make a completely custom center console and it could work but not worth the effort IMO. Could do one in the passenger side airbag compartment for your navigater though. (seen it done in a CRAZY FJ before haha)

This is my setup for anyone who cares, I wish it was integrated into the dash but I wouldn't be happy with it in the DIN location, even if I could somehow cram it in there. This also allows me to remove the iPad for home use and theft aversion.

Ive got the similar setup as rickashay for my nexus 7. I find it works very well. The post for the holder is bolted under the center console so it looks reasonable clean.

@zucariniwalter - That's more like what I'm picturing.

The Nexus 7 is only comes in at just 7.8 inches x 4.7 inches x 0.41 inch, so it's a fairly small unit. It's smaller than the iPad mini in two of those dimensions, but probably close to 50% thicker. I figure I'd have to pretty much recreate the entire center console similar to what zuc posted, except I'd want it to be installed in such a way as to have a little rolling aluminum door cover up everything. Also, if I were to do it, I'd want to be a touch screen face plate for the am/fm/mp3 while showing the Torque guages 100% of the time and I'm not sure I can do that.

I'll probably make a custom a-pillar piece to mount a couple inactive smartphones, one for Torque, one for GPS and leave the factory HU in the center console.

@rick - the LED's you're running look killer man!

I have the nexus 7 32gb just wifi version and love it, have all my text books on it. Only paid 180 for it practically brand new with a case too off craigslist.

Anyway back on topic, there is a guy on TW that put an ipad in his dash. Made it the primary stereo system and everything.

Just get a pioneer app radio. Alot of people don't like it but i really like mine. My ipad is only a wifi that would be dumb to hook up in my 4runner because i primarily use pandora and iheart radio (yes most apps will work with the app radio even if they aren't optimal for it) netflix and youtube is fun to watch on it.
