iPad Mini In Dash?

Hawaiian..... thank you. I was thinking I was going to have to dig into wires and "create" some sort of volume, but the problem I'm having is EXACTLY what you described. The iPad defaults to max volume when it connects to the iStreamer due to the iStreamer trying to create that "best sound" that you talked about. I have been forgetting to set it to around the middle once I turn the car on, and the minute I hit play I'm quickly reminded to turn the volume down. I'm off to amazon to find a controller like you were talking about...
 
Looks great! How has it held up to heat? Do you have the display on the entire time the vehicle is on? Thanks for being the test-pilot on this!
 
The mount has held up well to the heat, no issues at all (and seeing as how it's been 100+ here in TX for the last couple of weeks, it's a great testing ground). I do keep the iPad display on all the time, mostly on the music page or IHeartRadio page if I'm listening live. I do take the iPad out of the car if I'm leaving it for more than 30-45 mins because of the heat. I'm not worried about the iPad itself, but the battery life will be shortened if you start leaving it out in the heat like that for long periods. So far I'm still happy with it, and hopefully I can attach the volume knob sometime in the next two weeks.
 
The volume knob (subwoofer/amp type control) was installed a few days after my last post, and it has corrected the one thing I really didn't like about the setup. After having it completed for over a month know, I don't have any issues with it. The music is great, the NAV screen with google maps is awesome, and having internet right there to check on something while sitting in a parking spot is pretty awesome. I only have about a 20 min commute to work, but I use the internet radio each time to and from and still haven't even come close to using 2GB of data (that data gap is filled nicely with ForeFlight downloads for the state of TX - good thing I don't live in Alaska I guess...)

Somehow I missed how your project ended up...I think it looks pretty good!

I'm back on this now that I'm running out of things to do to my truck...

I've spent some time researching it tonight and I've come up with an idea that would work, but I'm not sure if it's worth the financial investment. I could probably do all of it myself, provided I get my glassing skills up to snuff.

Basically I think it may be possible to cram two screens into the dash. Slide the iPad over towards the driver, and then add in another universal 6 or 7 inch screen on the passenger side of the dash, angled towards the driver. The iPad would work as your headunit and media center, and the second screen would be a dedicated camera display (I'm thinking of adding front, both sides, and back cameras). Lastly I would cram a single din unit somewhere under the dash or out of sight. That way I can connect the iPad to the single din via aux or bluetooth to play audio. I can also connect the single din to the stock steering wheel controls so I can keep those to control the sound on the iPad.

It's a setup that would get the functionality of the iPad, without sacrificing any of the features that we already have (backup camera and steering wheel controls).

The trickiest part would be glassing the two screens together in the dash...I've had a Metra dash kit lying around for a few months so I may just start hacking it up for kicks just to see what I can come up with.

I know I could get it to work, but just because something CAN be done doesn't mean is SHOULD be done...

So I'm still debating. It may be just adding too many things to go wrong.
 
Late to the party here, and now slightly off-topic, but MotionX GPS (not MotionX Drive) is the best application for storing offline maps and navigation. It has a ton of features and is well worth the $2.99.
 
only bad part is the mount will make someone think there is an ipad in the vehicle double so if they see 2 mounts.

Gents,

The reign of the iPad mini in dash is over far too soon. Unfortunately, my wife was in another car accident a couple of weeks back (she's fine, Accord is f'd up - she has been hit 3 times in two years now, none of them her fault (guy ran a red light, lady didn't yield on green, and in this latest episode a gentleman didn't believe stop signs applied to him...)).

Long story short, we have had to make some financial decisions (doesn't matter how good your insurance is, car accidents, regardless of fault, are f'ing expensive) that have resulted in different vehicles for both of us. My beloved 4Runner, the second love of my life, is now waiting for a new owner on the used car lot.

The good side of this is, before getting rid of her (the car, not my wife), I put the aftermarket stereo back in and now have an iPad mini mount and iStreamer sitting around for a car I no longer own. That's where you come in....

I'm willing/needing to part with both of them. Who's up for a new stereo system? You'll obviously need to provide your own iPad mini, and will need a few accessories (the adapter for an aftermarket stereo can be purchased from Crutchfield (it turns the factory adaptor into RCA plugs).

Any takers? I'd like to get $225 out of the whole thing (the iStreamer is almost worth that itself), and that includes shipping. PM me if you're interested. I'll try to get pics up in the next few days.

CoastiePilot is another example of why the members on this site make this place heads and shoulders above many of the other forums out there. I wish him better luck with his vehicles in the future. Thanks for taking the time to share the full spectrum of your experience with this set up.
 
iPad setup has been sold. Thanks for all of your help throughout the build process, hope it helped someone along the way. Except Stiffler. Just kidding. But seriously though, everyone except Stiffler.
 
hey there is only 1 F in Stifler! Glad the wife is OK, that sucks.... IPAD mount still looks like shit but that doesnt matter in the big scheme of things lol
 
Magnetic iPad Mini Mount

I just got a new 2016 Trail Premium and was looking to replace the head unit with something that had CarPlay [not a fan of the Entune system]. I read around this forum in dozens of threads on how to replace the head unit, how to install the iPad mini in the unit, different windshield mounts etc. and I shopped around on options for CarPlay units. After a lot of searching and reading, I ended up finding a perfect magnetic mount that lets me snap in my mini flush-mounted right over my stock head unit. Install took 5 minutes with the 3M sticky backer that comes with it and I didn't have to do any permanent alteration or drilling.

The fit is perfect and it doesn't move an inch even while offroading [you have to see it to believe how solid it is compared to other mount options]. I just use it over bluetooth for Waze, offline trail maps, Spotify, etc. It also works great with Siri and the new voice assistant feature in the Entune system [holding the call button on the steering wheel].

I'm also thinking about getting a charger that has enough juice for the iPad. This Anker one is pretty sweet as a dedicated charger and it matches the inside seat trim and black/red stitching.

Same here. Always gets me to my destination, plays whatever I want over bluetooth, always connects to my phone, phone quality is better than it was in my Ford.

I kinda like not having a big screen tv in my dash.

I reached the same conclusion about the app radio. The smoothness of iOS and it's lack of bugs is half the reason I want one in my dash. The pioneer radio defeats much of that.

The only thing I am worried about right now is losing the backup camera. I know I could replace the rearview mirror and re-wire it to that, but id rather keep the display in the dash.

But otherwise this is high on my list for upcoming mods. I already have a mini and have been playing around with places to put it in my dash, I think it could work without to much custom work (which is good, because audio shops will kill you on fiberglass work).

In installed the Pioneer 4600 in my previous vehicle; outstanding head unit but only ever used Pandora of the installed apps and ran everything else directly through my iPhone.
