iPhone 5 Info Thread

Hey, you better download LOOKOUT or some highend virus program...there are now reports of Android apps IN Android MARKET stealing vital information: Android apps used by millions vulnerable to password, e-mail theft | Ars Technica

Quote:
Android applications downloaded by as many as 185 million users can expose end users' online banking and social networking credentials, e-mail and instant-messaging contents because the programs use inadequate encryption protections, computer scientists have found.

The researchers identified 41 applications in Google's Play Market that leaked sensitive data as it traveled between handsets running the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android and webservers for banks and other online services.

"We could gather bank account information, payment credentials for PayPal, American Express and others," the researchers, from Germany's Leibniz University of Hannover and Philipps University of Marburg, wrote. "Furthermore, Facebook, email and cloud storage credentials and messages were leaked, access to IP cameras was gained and control channels for apps and remote servers could be subverted." Other exposed data included the contents of e-mails and instant messages.

This is why my Nexus S 4G is now for my kids to play only. No vital information on the phone. All deleted. Android is too vulnerable to hackers. And this is also why businesses are jumping to Apple.

there are a LOT of pc's out there still running windows xp rather than 7 or 8. Why? because the new operating system isn't always better with old hardware. and if it is backwards compatible with the old hardware my next question would be... did they dumb down the software to work with the old hardware, and if so why the hell did I upgrade to new hardware.

Just sayin

serious question though since you seem to know far more about the iphone than I do.

I recently started re-ripping all of my CD's to uncompressed FLAC format and was planning to convert them over to MP3 for the phones, but my EVO will play the FLAC format just fine. Any idea of the g/fs 4GS (something like that) will handle that or if I need to compress them for her?

Not sure. Sorry. I used to copy MP3 CDs over to my iTunes, but within the past year or so, i have been using iTunes. My only advice is to use the original CD and just copy it over to iTunes. This way, the song information stays with the song and then iTunes matches it (and upgrades song quality if needed) via iCloud.

As for your software comment, yes, 3GS phones won't have Maps (no big loss to some! :D ) because there is no Siri nor is the processor strong enough for 3D flyover etc.. BUT, the main thing is that a 3GS iPhone owner still has the latest features and are still connected to the latest software.

See: Tempting fate: Installing iOS 6 on the iPhone 3GS | Ars Technica

"iOS 6 doesn't make the iPhone 3GS any slower or more difficult to use than it was before, which should be good news to anyone who keeps theirs around as a secondary or backup phone—indeed, it's pleasantly surprising how many of the refinements and improvements make their way down to Apple's oldest-supported piece of iOS hardware."

Remember, 3GS came out in 2009 and is still being supported with features today. Can you say the same about your EVO? Can you say the same about ANY Android phone not named Nexus?? Look at Koz's top-of-the-line Android phone (Galaxy S3)...he's still waiting for Jellybean and it could be MONTHS before he gets it, according to Koz's article.

(Just FYI, Samsung is now trying to be very much like Apple with Kies. Kies is a direct copy of iTunes.)

My EVO is the brand new one so the only real issue there is that sprint is lagging behind on the LTE, service installation, but thats the same issue no matter what phone you have on their service. I'll have to ask my parents how the OG EVO's are doing I bought them both those when I got my original. I do know the both have working talk to text and talking navigation though, even with the older operating systems that were optimized for those phones.

As far as FLAC vs the mp3 ... FLAC has all of the album cover and artist info in it as well. It was just designed for people that want uncompressed music files, no matter what you do to an MP3 its still not the same amount of data as the original CD. I wanted to make sure I had 100% perfect copies of the CD's on hand, I just found as a bonus I can actually use them on my phone even though they take up a LOT more space than an MP3 or WMA format. I figured if her phone could handle it I wouldn't need to give up sound quality.

Still not sure why you are so defensive about a phone, did you work on designing it or something?

So, you have the EVO 3D. HTC is a great brand. I like them a lot actually...probably my favorite Android brand.

But, like Koz, you're on the waiting list for JB, right? It would not surprise me that you would get JB before Koz.

I am not being defensive...well, i guess that i am being defensive against ignorant statements by Android fanboys who have no idea what they are talking about (e.g. Koz). At least, for me, i have experiences with both OS...past and current. I have Jellybean on my Nexus S 4G.

If you notice, then you will see that most of my posts are in reponse to such idiocy.

The bigger question is...why are YOU here? Sure, you came here to discuss the music transfer (or so you claim). But, you came here just for that...or are you really here being defensive about Android?? I am sure for the former. ;):

And as always, i always come with facts to back up what i say...from legit sources, not small time blogs.

Surprised no one has mentioned how the international S3 has started getting Android 4.1 and it's as big a failure iOS6 was when it first debuted and on top of the problems carriers have put their own constraints on it further ****ing it up.

Well, that applies to ALL phones, not named Nexus. Touchwiz, Sense, Blur, etc. all are fairly heavy software additions that slows down the phone and take up space...not to mention carrier specific apps.

There have been 4 EVO's I think ... the original which I had first (previous was a sprint/nextel rugged flip phone thing) then the 3D, then an evo lite or something, and now the new one HTC EVO

As far as why I am here, well the 3rd gen forum has been getting a bit light recently so I popped into off topic and this was the only active thread so i checked the last couple of posts and had an opinion on new software on old hardware which was the first post. Then I figured if you could answer a couple of iphone questions with out me researching a device i don't own, and the g/f probably will never figure out that I would ask.

Speaking of, another question.... is there a way to tether with the iphone with out jailbreaking it? On the EVO's i've used pda.net, but i know they said you have to jailbreak the iphone first which the g/f is scared to do, but I get tired of always giving mine up to provide internet at the shop.

as for jellybean, nope don't have it yet, waiting to see if the rumor that the android will FINALLY get usb audio ability is true though. I'm loving the sound quality with the FLAC files now, but having that big clunky headphone jack plugged in sucks. I will absolutely admit my iphone jealousy on that one.

Ahh, so, you got HTC X One version for Sprint. Nice. It is the best version of HTC X One IMO.

For me, i got iTether app which was an app that allows me to tether my laptop to my iPhone without jailbreaking via USB. But, this app was banned from app store shortly after i downloaded it.

No, you cannot create hotspot without buying the plan from carrier. Jailbreaking is no harder to do than rooting on Android. I don't do it because part of the reason why i switched to Apple (from Android) is for security reasons (i am paranoid!). I would have gone to Blackberry if BB had anything good to offer.

Another point that you should know. With my Nexus S 4G, even though i have ICS and now JB, i do NOT have facial recognition nor panoramic feature. So, like Apple, Google took away features for older devices with older hardware. This is no different than Apple not giving Maps to older iPhones for technical reasons.

As for music, USB in the car sucks with Android. I went thru millions of ways (and $$$) to get my Samsung Epic to play music in my 2010 Prius via USB. Never got to get it going. BT Audio is compressed and you can tell the difference when compared with USB. Same goes for using headphone jack, which is worst than BT Audio. So, technically speaking, your FLAC files are heavily compromised as soon as you plug it into your car stereo with the 3.5 jack. Your GF's iPhone should be able to match or beat your phone via USB despite having lower quality music files.

And that is the beauty of iPhone/iPods. Almost everything out there (audio wise) is designed for Apple stuff. You just don't hear anything with "Made for Android" label. Headphones, car stereo, stereo pods, etc.. Only recently do you start to hear headphone companies making another set of controls for Android users (e.g. Klipsch S4A).

Part of the reason is because of the unique Apple connector that does not need drivers: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/1196469-post2.html

By making their connectors this way, they can make accessory maker's life easier. Koz may think that Apple connectors are idiotic, but there is a reason for everything, which you have found out first hand.

But, going back to FLAC files, why do you care about uncompressed music files? As of now, iTunes (via iMatch) will automatically upgrade your low-bit rate tracks to 256kbps AAC files if iMatch can recognize the song. For me, this is plenty good because i don't use my iPhone to play music in my theater room. I do have a few nice headphones (HK CL, Klipsch S4 and x10i, etc.) but i don't think that those headphones are high quality enough to convey the music quality that much to the point that you can tell the difference. The same goes if you're using Beats Audio feature and their headphones. BA is horrible audio wise. I think that HTC is going away from Beats Audio...yippee!! Good for HTC!!

Car audio is the same way. Unless you have a $5000++++ audio system in a tomb-like car (e.g. Lexus LS460), all that high quality is loss to wind & road noises and the inherent noise of a car audio system. It is kinda like picking a car audio headunit with the lowest THD% or 4V pre-outs. All useless in a car. Home audio...now that maybe different...but it goes back to diminishing returns as prices skyrocket...and simply how good your hearing is. Not many people will be able to honestly tell a difference in a track recorded uncompressed vs. one that is pretty good quality.

The audio quest started off more as me making sure I had a GOOD back up, I had read by chance that the android would play the files so I gave it a try. It did have a noticeably better sound than the previous phone set up had. Thats not to say you couldn't compress the files to a certain degree and not hit the threshold of the crappy connection to the car stereo, I just haven't personally tried it to find that point yet.

My last daily driver was a Scion tC, that my g/f took over so she still has my good stereo components in it, I'm slowly trying to move it to the newest addition to my line up, which is an MR2 Spyder. That has zero room to drag around CD's so the phone solution is going to be best there. We both know a tiny convertible will never be great for sound, but starting with the best source you can is always better than starting with something less.

Conclusion:
After the smoke has cleared and the dust settled, we have a unanimous winner amongst the group. Before this comparison, it was arguable as to which of the four devices would have the upper hand when it comes to taking photos, but as we’ve seen, Apple’s latest prodigy in the iPhone 5 has proven to us that it’s unmistakably the most well-rounded when it comes to shooting photos and videos.

Given your setups, i would bet that you won't be able to tell a difference at all b/w FLAC via 3.5 vs. 256 via USB. Scion tC and MR2 are no Lexus in terms of road/wind noise. USB provides access to playlist etc.. FLAC via 3.5 is like cassette! :D You may have the best source (FLAC), but you are diluting it badly with 3.5 jack (worst form of music, second to only XM radio)...along with road/wind noises. In fact, i would bet that USB will sound better, even if recorded at 128!

Now, if you're talking about headphones, then you may hear a difference...but ONLY if your headphones are of high quality...and we're talking $300++ range headphones to actually hear the small difference b/w FLAC and 256 recording. And if you're talking about home audio, then there is no substitute for original CDs (or even better, DVD-A, which is a rarity).

Scion had a **** load of dynamat to HELP it out, MR2 won't get any, as the light weight in that is far more important to me for that car. As far as Lexus being quite, they are for a while ... like everything else the newer **** is cheaper and cheaper, I had to dump my IS300 before the whole chassis needed rebuilt. The roof had stretch marks around all 4 corners of the sunroof and every speed bump you could hear the doors squeak against the body as that poor thing flexed. guess braces and seam welding portions weren't enough to handle some fun street suspension on it.

I still think the best Toyotas were built/designed before the year 2000, most of the line up under any name past that point just seems to have cheaper build quality than the OG stuff.

as far as the audio, I am anxious to get my stereo components back so I can try it out!

This is a rather cool screen protector that i have never heard of until today: Shop Online | Green Onions Supply

Here is a quick review of it: Green Onions iPhone 5 screen protectors show everyone else how it’s done [Review] - TodaysiPhone.com

This protector is very much like PowerSupport one...it is a dry application protector (unlike Zagg and others that requires water/solution). Some like dry application because you have less risk of water getting into the phone speaker.

The nice thing about this protector is that it has a true oleophobic coating. (PowerSupport claims to have one too, but i was far from impress with it!) See the videos:

Oleophobic Screen Protector Demonstration | Green Onions Supply
Anti-Fingerprint Screen Protector Demonstration | Green Onions Supply

Installation video: Smartphone Screen Protector Installation Instructions | Green Onions Supply

Price is about average...$14, like PowerSupport. Hmmm, i don't know...i kinda like this protector over Zagg HD.

In Q3, Apple sold 26.9 million iPhones. Wall Street had estimated that about 25 million iPhones will be sold in Q3.

"Apple said today that it sold 26.9 million iPhones in the last three months....

Wall Street analysts had expected Apple to have sold a little more than 25 million iPhones."

For me, 26.9 million is a greater number than 25 million. But, that's just me.

But, as reminded in this article (Apple earnings preview: All eyes on iPhone, iPad | Apple - CNET News):

One thing to keep in mind is that some analysts are largely looking ahead to the next quarter, given changes to Apple's product cycle.

"Our view is that September quarter numbers do not matter," JP Morgan's Mark Moskowitz said in a note sent out to investors today. "Apple can miss or beat. It does not matter."

Moskowitz points to the launches of the iPhone 5 and the iPad Mini as things that make this a "transitory" quarter on the way to a giant next quarter.

"In our view, the two important iPhone and iPad launches set the stage for big numbers to be reported in late January 2013 as relates to December quarter results," Moskowitz said.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

BTW, as you know Koz, Galaxy S3 is popular...Samsung said that it sold 20 million GS3 in its first 100 days...which is record setting for Samsung. Apple sold 5 million iPhone 5 in two days. :moon:

Who do you think will win this race, Koz?
