iPhone 5 Info Thread

None I know of for what you're looking for. I am sure that the 4S is more reliable since the chassis was the same as iphone 4. I am sure that there will be less issues with 5S vs 5.
 
Are google maps the maps in the new OS?

I read that you can get the google maps app, but I also heard it was replacing the mega fail apple maps with the newest OS?

I sure wish that it did. Google Maps rock on iOS for sure! :) It runs even better than in my brother's Galaxy Nexus! :D Apple needs to just buy out TomTom and insert their people in it to run the database etc.. All this collaboration with TomTom ain't helping anyone, including Apple's reputation!

As an aside, I can tell you though that Apple Airport Extreme is just awesome!! It is so much better than my old Netgear crap! So, while iMaps is a disaster, their other stuff ain't too bad! :)

I'm getting a new phone in a couple weeks. I would like to see this thread continue. I use my phone for making calls, text messaging, and taking pics and video of my 20 month old. I currently have a samsung captivate. I am not that interested in the numbers and technical details of an android phone or an iphone. I just want something that will take a good picture and a decent video. Also the phone should be able to stand up to the abuse of a 20 month old.

Million dollar questions. I will try to answer them. From the other thread, you seem to be stuck b/w iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3.

For me, the ONLY reasons that you should get GS3 are:

1. You like big screen, and/or
2. You like Android software.

GS3 is a very good phone. It is Samsung best phone to date. It has a nice processor and very vivid (oversaturated, but some prefer this) screen technology. But, it suffers from typical Samsung flaws including horrible cell radio (poor cell reception, esp if you're on CDMA networks), cheap-feeling plastic construction (i say feeling because supposedly, it is made from "good" plastics), and horrible after-sale service. Software updates take forever to come...just ask Koz!

Within Android nowadays, you have better options than GS3...all depending on what carrier you're with. GS3 will likely be replaced with GS4 early next year...so, why are you buying it now? What are the competition?

1. HTC DNA...it's just on Verizon. This is the latest phone from HTC with the latest hardware on any Android phone. It has a super huge 1080p screen (5")...bigger and better quality screen than GS3. Its processor (S4 PRO) is the latest from Qualcomm and is quad-core...again, much better than GS3 (in USA). The materials are of much higher quality (and design) than GS3. Downfall? Battery life may be bad if you use it a lot (big arse ultra-high resolution screen + quad core CPU ain't good for any battery!). In addition, although HTC has a long history of great customer service, it is on rapid decline from a market share point of view and thus is financially limited. Why do you care? Well, this may affect future software updates and future development of the phone. What is HTC top dog now? I thought that it was HTC X One (as HTC claimed when it was introduced)...but now you have DNA...i am very confused! And this is bad for future product support!

2. Google Nexus 4 (from LG)...this is if you're on GSM network. With GSM, i highly recommend Straight-Talk. There is no point in signing contract with ATT or T-Mo when you have Straight Talk!! Straight Talk is no-contract cheap plan that uses ATT network (including HSPA+). However, no LTE...a downfall, but not too bad since you still have HSPA+. Nexus 4 has a big screen...about same size as GS3, but MUCH better quality (more accurate colors, etc.). HTC DNA still better though. Nexus 4 also has the same super quad core processor from Qualcomm (S4 PRO) as in HTC DNA. And since it is pure Google phone, it will be updated in a timely manner for the next 2 years...much better than Samsung and HTC. Downfall? Well, camera is not as good as HTC nor GS3. It is very heat-sensitive which results in dethrottling of processor (bad for games!). The glass panels break easily, as was the case with iPhone 4/4S. So, you need a case/bumper for sure!

Now for the iPhone 5. iPhone 5 is probably one of the toughest phone that you can buy in terms of handling drops. It will scratch easily, but your phone will function. (see: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/1200289-post58.html) No contest b/w GS3 and iPhone 5 in the toughness argument.

iPhone 5 has the best camera and video combo. It has arguably the best camera, beating the low-light expert (Nokia 920), HTC, and GS3. Video is excellent as well. Although it does suffer from flaring at times, this is the case with ALL phone cameras (and most P&S cameras). Examples of flaring in other cameras?

As for screen display, iPhone 5 may not have the highest resolution, but it sure has the best quality display on the planet. (see: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/1196493-post9.html) In addition, pixel density has gone wild in newer phones...with questionable benefits and one horrible side effect (battery life!): Tech's New Most Meaningless Spec: PPI

As for processor, the Apple A6 (dual core, customized designed by Apple) is a powerhouse! It has the best combination of CPU and GPU processing...by a very wide margin in some cases. And it is super power efficient...easily beating out all Android not named RAZR Maxx HD. These qualities put it well above the latest Qualcomm chip S4 PRO despite it being a dual core CPU & triple core GPU. This can clearly be seen in the 1st page of this thread.

Specs are useless when it comes to smartphones. Optimization of software and hardware is what makes or breaks a phone...it is what separates the top phone from the bottom. Just ask Windows phone...the previous gen Windows phone had only one core CPU but it was able to beat most Androids with dual cores via software optimization. This is simply where Apple excels because it controls both software and hardware. No Android can claim this. (And this is why Windows also has very specific guidelines on their phones hardware.)

Lastly, of course, there are iTunes and App Store that are second to none. The Apple ecosystem is superior...but, i must admit that Android is pretty nice too (minus all the viral apps). Apple is simply a more secure system if privacy is important to you. And yeah, with any phone + 20 months old, you need a case!!

Those who have updated to 6.0.2, have you seen a drop in battery life?? Some reports have noted this. For me, I have not seen it on either mine or my wife's.
 
Thanks for all the info Thai. I'm not really stuck on an iphone 5 or GS3. These are just the two phones that everyone seems to be talking about. I'm on contract with at&t. I do like the feel of the iphone better. The GS3 does feel alot like my sons toy phones. I actually like the look and feel of the 4s the most, but the glass front and back scare me. Anyways, I appreciate all the info you have supplied everyone with in this thread.

Not at all. I've noticed my phone having more charge than usual lately, but that may just be a coincidence.

Get out of AT&T. Go to Straight Talk. SAVE LOTS OF MONEY. I would get Nexus 4 with bumper case.

If you're on GSM (ATT or T-Mo), then there is NO REASON not to use Straight Talk unless you're bogged down with family plans. Even then, it may still offer savings. ST uses ATT network...so, it is far superior to T-Mo. Yes, ST does not have LTE, but you have access to HSPA+. And with Nexus 4, you should be able to pull in 30-45 Mbps download speeds on HSPA+...which easily rivals LTE.

This is a great website...and is highly regarded by camera professionals!

According to this website, if you take out Nokia PureView 808 (scored 9.0) because it really isn't an option here in the USA, iPhone 5 ranks tops (scored 8.0) followed by HTC X One (7.5) and then GS3 taking 3rd place (7.3).

The true competitor to iPhone 5 is the new Nokia 920, which has surprisingly loss battles with iPhone 5 recently despite having similar technology as PureView 808 from well-known news outlets. However, none of these news outlets can compare with DPREVIEW in terms of camera testings. My expectation is that Nokia 920 will at least give iPhone 5 a run for the money, if not beat it slightly. The problem is that Nokia "claims" that their camera software is still in "beta" and that customers have to wait for the final software to pass judgement. (Or is that an excuse for recent lackluster performance on comparo tests??) I would imagine that DPREVIEW maybe waiting for that to happen, which may be a few months from now??

(And yeah, i am super happy that DPREVIEW has made a separate website to review smartphones...but that tells you how the camera world have changed with the smartphone [specifically iPhone camera] revolution.)

For Sprint customers, we have some good news this quarter!! First, we were bought out by SoftBank, which has very very deep pockets and are deeply interested in expanding coverage and LTE.

Next, we heard about Sprint buying some US Cellular spectrum in the Midwest to boost coverage.

And now, this icing on the cake: Quartz

Basically, Sprint bought out Clearwire, which has tons of spectrum for LTE (and LTE+??) deployment! I will let the article explain how significant this is:

"And spectrum, like land, is something they ain’t making any more of. Broadcasting at whatever frequency you like would lead to all kinds of interference and no wireless signal would ever get through. That’s why the US Federal Communications Commission, and its equivalent in every other country on the planet, periodically auctions off portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Whoever gets the rights to this spectrum can do with it as they see fit.

With an acquisition, Sprint would own a mind-boggling 184 MHz of spectrum, which is more than AT&T (77MHz) and Verizon (83MHz) combined. More spectrum means more bandwidth, and more bandwidth ultimately could ultimately mean faster wireless speeds for Sprint’s mobile customers. It’s as if Sprint is about to have a highway with twice as many lanes on it than either AT&T or Verizon. (That said, both AT&T and Verizon currently have about twice as many subscribers as Sprint’s 50 million.) The acquisition of Clearwire by Sprint may be the primary reason that Japan telco Softbank invested in Sprint in October.

The idea is that if Sprint in the US and Softbank in Japan own the same chunk of spectrum, handset makers like Apple and Samsung will have an incentive to create devices that can take advantage of their networks, potentially allowing their customers faster wireless access to the internet than any other combination of devices and carrier in Japan or the US. Clearwire is already building a next-generation high speed wireless network, faster even than the one currently being rolled out by Verizon and AT&T.

Sprint still has to decide what to do with an older “4G” network Clearwire built out, called WiMAX, a technology that the rest of the wireless industry has more or less abandoned. That’s a lot of towers that, in theory, will have to be retrofitted if it switches over to the new standard, known as LTE. In the long run, owning this much spectrum presents Sprint with an unprecedented opportunity to catch up to AT&T and Verizon, breaking the US mobile carrier duopoly."

So, yeah, i am sticking with Sprint...it looks like my 11 year (consecutive) relationship with Sprint will continue for many more years! :)

battery life at 5:00pm yesterday 100%. battery life this morning 9:00 (without any charging, playing pandora radio, talking on tapatalk , listing to ipod, 8 phone calls over 5-10minutes talk time and 10 text messages.) 75% battery remains. both wifi and blue tooth were active throughout.
 
One more thing about battery life...check SETTINGS and then scroll down to the bottom. You will see some of your apps listed. Check each one to make sure that they don't drain your battery. For example, i had Denver Broncos & Houston Texans apps on there. When i clicked on both this morning (by accident), each said that it was checking for updates EVERY MINUTE!! WTF?! No wonder i am seeing a faster drain on my battery than my wife's iP5. Just to make sure, i deleted both apps...it wasn't that helpful much anyways.

Well, just an update. Belkin is no good. I managed to scratched all 3 protectors in one month i guess. And i am not rough with them either! Actually, one of them was my fault...i cut it with my Benchmade knife by accident (don't ask!).

So, i am now using the screen protector from PureGear that came with my case. It is a bit thicker than Belkin...still crystal clear...so, hopefully, it will last longer.

The case & holster itself are just perfect! I can't find a fault with it...and i try my hardest to find issue with it. Beautifully designed.

eBay and Amazon have the PureGear Utilitarian System for around $18-21.
