The S3 uses a microUSB connector which is the industry standard for just about every other device. Apple PURPOSELY uses a proprietary connector to squeeze every nickel out of you.

We’ve already seen that a USB connector only has four pins: two for data, one for power and one for ground. It’s up to a connected computer to be able to load drivers to be smart and powerful enough to translate the data coming from a USB device into a format it can actually work with.

The 30-Pin Apple Dock Connector works quite differently, though. Each pin has a specific function, and all a compatible accessory needs to do is watch what data is coming through the specific pins it needs to provide that device’s functionality.

Think of the Apple Dock Connector like a lock, and a compatible accessory like a key. In any lock, there are a number of tumblers; for a key to open that lock, it needs to be precisely cut so that its ridges trip those tumblers and then unlock, say, a door or a box.

That’s how the 30-Pin Apple Dock Connector works. While two of those thirty pins do provide USB data-in and data-out for the purposes of syncing, the rest have very specific functions. The result is that if you plug your iPhone into, say, a speaker dock, the speaker dock’s connector is configured so that it only trips the pins it needs: in this case, audio out and power in. An accessory made to display video from your iPod classic on your TV, on the other hand, will be configured to only watch the video out and audio out pins. And so on.

The original 30-Pin Dock Connector was a remarkably future-proof design, and Apple has added functionality to many of the blank pins over time; until now, there’s a pin for nearly every function an accessory could possibly want to provide. The benefits for accessory makers are huge, because they don’t have to make devices with power-hungry CPUs to try to figure out and translate all of the data coming in and out of an iDevice into a format it can actually use.

But there’s a catch. While the Apple Dock Connector has lasted almost a decade without a significant design change, it’s one of the bulkiest components of an iPhone or iPad. That makes the Dock Connector a big bottleneck when it comes to slimming down future iPhones and iPads and giving them better battery life. After nine years, it’s in Apple’s vested interest to make a smaller, better Dock Connector.

In 2012, many of the pins on the 30-Pin Apple Dock Connector are reserved for obsolete technology.

A full eight pins on the 30 Pin Dock Connector are dedicated to maintaining Firewire compatibility. The only problem is that Apple has abandoned Firewire in favor of USB 2, Thunderbolt and now USB 3. It’s pretty much a dead technology. All of those pins can be reclaimed without impacting consumers or accessory makers (except in extremely marginal cases).

That’s not all. We’ve also highlighted pins 8, 9 and 10, which seem to exist only to provide pretty marginal video-out functionality to a handful of iPods. Between both the Firewire pins and the legacy video-out pins, we can easily shave 11 pins off of a 30-Pin Apple Dock Connector, leaving just 19 pins total.

That’s why the best option available to Apple is to just drop the pins accessory makers aren’t using from the existing Apple Dock Connector. Doing so will allow Apple to make the connector at least 37% smaller while still maintaining backwards compatibility by selling a 30-Pin-to-19-Pin adapter, which, of course, will also make Apple a tidy profit. All the while keeping relationships intact with both accessory partners and customers who might otherwise have seen thousands of dollars worth of their “Made for iPod”, “Made for iPad” or “Made for iPhone” accessories become obsolete overnight."

Just like no memory card (if you need more memory with an iphone it will cost you HUNDREDS more!) and no replaceable battery. I sometimes need more power then one battery can provide (when traveling) and for several dollars I have all the extra power I need!

You need extra battery because your phones sucks the juice out too damn quickly due to inefficient software (inability to properly close an app; inability to shut down FLASH, etc.) and inefficient battery management with hardware. In addition, your screen is huge which sucks juice...and despite the claims, SAMOLED sucks battery no less (if not more) than any other screen technologies. And if i have to travel, then anyone can buy those backup miniature battery pack for a few bucks too. No biggie. Lithium ion batteries rock. Replaceable battery also requires cheapa$$ plastic backcover instead of a solid piece of aluminum as in iPhone 5. Lets face it, NONE of Samsung products reek quality. Flimsy cheap plastic that would make Toys-R-Us blush with embarrassment!

Ok...tell me why Google themselves are moving away from memory card?

"Google still supports removable storage in Android, but it is leading by example and providing phones (and now a tablet) with one big block of storage that users can use for anything they like -- be it media, documents, or apps. You hit the nail on the head. This will be an argument that will never be won as each of us values each individual feature differently. As someone who currently uses a windows home server, boxee box, android phone, ipad2, apple tv, roku, and a MacBook pro on a daily basis I understand that what works for me may not be the best setup for someone else.

People need to stop banking everything on specs and headlines and go into a store and try a couple phones. Their decision should be based on what the best phone is for their individual needs.
 
Over saturation is one of flavors of cool-aid Apple was serving. It’s funny how Apple increased the amount saturation in the new i5 display. Retina display is another flavor; it is just a fancy name Apple’s version of their HD display (all the top phones have almost the SAME resolution. By the way there is a HUGE difference between LCD (old tech) and AMOLED and again Apple is a dollar short and a day late. Just like Corning Gorilla glass vs broken screen!

As far as speed, on paper yes the A6 makes the i5 to look faster but only time will tell. The S3 has proven to be the fastest phone to date. Its dual core 1.5s and 2 GB of ram run as fast as a quad core. Notice how Apple only compares the i5’s speed to the i4S. It’s amazing how the A6 i5 is already the class leader when there has not been one comparative test done yet (some people need to put the cool-aid down) Again, time will tell!

As far as battery life, 8hrs - 1450 mAh vs 11 hrs – 2100 mAh lets see, that looks like 37% better to me. These are OEM specs without cool-aid.

Lets see, I buy a i5 with 16GB ($200 more for 64GB) of embedded memory and I need more memory; what I need to buy a new phone! OR I buy a S3 with 16 GB of removable memory and SIMPLY buy a 64 GB microSD card for less then $100.

Koz, iPhones have had Gorilla glass for a long time...long before Samsung! :D Steve Jobs is what convinces Corning to use the glass on smartphones.

As for saturation, do ANY google search on legit smartphone screen comparo...all of them said the same thing...Sammy goes overboard to get high contrast by oversaturation of colors (all part of SAMOLED). Go ahead...do a search!

Memory...memory card is falling out of favor for OBVIOUS reasons. Your choice. It is like FLASH...it is an outdated technology that sucks. PLEASE READ ABOVE FROM Android website!!

Again, READ UP on A15 Cortex CPU...it is better, simply said. A15 is Samsung pride and joy...it is just that they could not get it ready for GS3. DO YOUR RESEARCH!

Did you notice that your laptop/computer searching for drivers when you insert your phone via micro-USB?? Hint: read above!

It is kind weird that Apple iPhone 4S with 500 MB RAM and only 800 MHz was able to hang (and beat) Android phones with 1GB RAM and 1.x GHz. Weird indeed. In other words, Koz, the specs you listed are meaningless.

Despite all those specs, your browser still lags; your homescreen switching still twitches.

When are you going to get Jellybean? October? Get ready, that will be your last major software update till death of your phone. Remember, unless you are a Nexus phone (and that is still not 100% true; trust me!), your lifespan is 18 months or less on all Android phones...as confirmed by Google. Basically, your phone will be worthless in LESS than 2 years! Think about that for a moment....

did you actually read any of the info that Thai posted? you just keep saying the same thing over and over again without any proof, not even an article or anything. the S3 costs a lot more than 140 also, do some research. I would rather pay for a quality product that will last me. when I used android, I had to replace my phone every year because the old one started crashing, mainly because it would update, and the phone couldn't handle the new version of software. my wife's Iphone has lasted for the past 3 years and hasn't had a single problem. works just like when it was new. my Macbook is almost 5 years old now, and works great. it is faster than my friends brand new windows laptop. I prefer to pay more for a better quality product. you can throw specs at me all day, but in the end, the quality doesn't compare. it's like comparing Toyota to Ford, sure ford has some faster cars, and maybe trucks that can haul more, but Toyota is still better.

That's because it is loses value about a month after it is release! And when you do sell it, it is worth a few pennies.

My iPhone 4S 32Gb was $300 new (contract price)...now, i can sell it to Amazon for $395. PROFIT. Of course, i can eBay it for a lot more too. But, i like to use Amazon because that is a good basis for comparison.

If you had the international GS3, then you have a chance...but with the Snapdragon S4, it will be an uphill battle against A6 and Apple's GPU. The A6 is simply better than anything this side of the pond.

You got it for cheap because that is what it is worth under contract. Android phones lose value instantly. And with a lifespan of less than 18 months in terms of software update, you are left with a brick and yesterday's software. And you won't be able to sell it.

My Galaxy Nexus S 4G is worth $66 bucks at Sprint after less than 2 years on the market.

I understand your enthusiasm for something you just bought...but there is no reason to be blinded by FACTS. None of what you wrote makes sense nor is backed by any known facts.

Having used many different droids and also having used the iPhone, and as well as being in the industry.....I can tell you there are less issues with apple products and a simplicity with the iPhone that is very hard to beat. That's what sells it. Plus people think its like this status thing or something. Some people want to get one without even knowing why. Excellent marketing.

However, droid has its place for a lot of people. Much more customization and until the iPhone 5, much faster speeds (4G).


I agree with what's being said, at the end of the day it's just a phone and people will always be on one side of the fence or the other.
