Actually, with an iPhone, you can upgrade your iPhone EVERY YEAR. For example, my iPhone 4S is worth $395 if i sell it on Amazon (which is very easy to do). After one year, your ETF (early termination fee) is half since it is pro-rated. So, for Sprint, that is about $150 after one year. You cancel Sprint's contract, pay the ETF. Then, turn around and sign a new 2-year contract with Sprint again...getting the same phone number and pay $200 for a new iPhone (if you like 16 GB).
Just do this every year. The iPhone pays for itself...and more!
Not sure if that's just sprint but if you came into my store to do that you'd not only lose your number, since you cancelled you line, the sales rep doing the sale could be liable for commissions fraud. So I don't recommend this route.
