Decided to chime in on the iPhone reliability discussion. Not taking sides with the heated debate, just simply relaying our experiences as we have 3 iPhones in our house.
- my iPhone 4: I'm on my 2nd one because the 1st one had an issue. The button on top stopped working during 14th month of owning it. Took it into the Apple Store in Frisco, TX. They said first batch did have mechanical issue with that button. Despite being 2 months beyond warranty expiration, Apple Store replaced my iPhone 4 for free.
- wife's iPhone 4: no problems and she's had it nearly 2 years
- son's iPhone 4s: no problems and he's had it 4 months and traveled internationally with it
Batteries in all of 'em have remain solid, whereas past phones (non-Apple) would experience battery degradation within a year. iOS versions have always performed well on each phone.
The Apple Store customer service experience isn't a one-off. I've talked with folks at work and church who have had similar experiences with iPads, iMacs, iPods, etc... This is why some of my friends are devoted to Apple beyond just the iPhone.
